Book drive aids group serving children at risk

The Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children has received a donation of new and gently used children's books that were contributed by area customers of the Sovereign Bank of New England.
David Medeiros, vice president and community branch manager for Sovereign Bank in New Bedford, presented two boxes of books, to be used by the hundreds of at-risk children served by the society in SouthCoast. The 259 Sovereign Bank branches throughout New England collected thousands of books.
This second annual holiday book drive was held statewide in conjunction with the United Way of New England. All the bank branches accepted new and used books, and the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children was selected as the recipient. The society is a member of the United Way of Greater Fall River, Greater New Bedford and Greater Attleboro/Taunton.

Work begins on new waste recycling facility

Bufftree Building Co. has begun work on a new facility for New Bedford Waste Services at 1245 Shawmut Ave., New Bedford. The state-of-the-art solid waste recycling and transfer facility will be capable of processing on a daily basis the more than 500 tons of material originating from construction site demolition, as well as commercial, industrial and residential waste.
Beginning in 2003, new Massachusetts regulations will require the recycling of all construction debris in an environmentally safe process. "Because of these new regulations, we recognized a need to expand our operations, and we chose the best to build it for us," said Michael Camara, president of New Bedford Waste Services and vice president of ABC Disposal Service Inc.
The 44,000-square-foot facility is expected to be operational by spring 2002.
SouthCoast-based Bufftree Building Co., a member of the Associated General Contractors of America, recently completed a 30-room addition to the Hampton Inn in Fairhaven and the conversion of the former North Dartmouth post office into the offices of Dr. Robert Baarsvik, DDS, PC.
