Dartmouth girls impressive at Janiak meet

The Dartmouth Indians had three individual winners to lead the girls' side of the pack at the Z. Walter Janiak Freshman/Sophomore Track Invitational.
Faithe Sheppard narrowly came in first place in the 300 yard dash (47.9), while teammates Amy Ferreira (shot put, 27-4¼) and Alicia Sousa (1,000 yard dash, 3:29.1) easily won their events.
New Bedford had two girls finish first. Tricia Sullivan leaped 4-10 to win the high jump and Kim Rioux was quicker than everyone else in the 50 yard hurdles (7.9). Her closest competitor was teammate Katherine Masson, who followed 1.1 seconds later.
Fairhaven and Apponequet had one victory each, as the Blue Devils' Jocelyn Mitchell won the two-mile in a time of 13:44.7 and the Lakers' Megan Calahan posted a victory in the 50 yard dash in a time of 6.6.
Old Rochester had the most second-place finishers with three.
Angie Kantner finished in a time of 13:58.2 in the two mile, while Emily Havel had a time of 6:10.5 in the one mile, and Nicole Franklin tossed a distance of 27-1 in the shot put (state qualifying).
Wareham's best finishers were Meghan Curley in the high jump (second, 4-6) and Elizabeth Ferguson in the one mile (third, 6:10.8).
"Ferguson came in third and that was her best time of the season. She had a good day," said Vikings' coach Tina Clark.
As for the boys' side of the meet, only one school had more than one first place finisher and that was New Bedford.
The Whalers' Jason Deconti and Steven Almeida claimed victory in the 1,000 yard dash (2:59.8), and 50 yard dash (5.9), respectively.
Seamus Pendergast also had a good day for the red-and-white, coming in second in the shot put with a heave of 39-5.
Stang, Voc-Tech, Dartmouth, and Apponequet had one win each.
Nick Mulvey had a lead of 5-1 to gain a victory for the Spartans. Enrique Monteiro had the Bears' lone win with a 4:58.1 one mile run. He was followed the closest by Tim Severine of Dartmouth, 19 seconds later.
The Indians' individual win came in the shot put, where Peter Tracey made a toss of 39-11.
Matt Magalles won the Lakers' lone race in the 300 yard dash with a time of 39.8.
Old Rochester's best finisher was Nick Cummings, who lost the 50 yard dash by just 0.1 seconds to Almeida with a time of 6.0.
