    FALL RIVER -- LaVina (Zeiler) Blais, 84, of Stafford Road, died Monday, Jan. 19, 1998, at Charlton Memorial Hospital. She was the widow of Gerard D. Blais Sr. and daughter of the late John V. and Anna (Cromer) Zeiler.
    Born in Reading, Pa., she resided in Pottsville, Pa., until moving to Fall River in 1946.
    She was a homemaker and a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. She previously held every elected office in the church for which she was eligible, including council member, clerk, secretary and treasurer. She was a former member of the First Congregational Church and was a past president of the Ladies Federation and a life member of the Ladies Benevolent Society.
    Mrs. Blais was a lifelong summer vacationer at North Truro on Cape Cod. She was an amateur ornithologist and kept records for 40 years regarding marsh birds and the shore and their movements in relation to the salt content in the water. This study was published in a scientific journal and sent to Cornell University.
    Survivors include her son, Rev. Dr. Gerald D. Blais Jr., pastor of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Fall River; two sisters, Dolores Sabisky of Norfolk, Va., and Joanne Harkins of New Philadelphia, Pa.; a brother, Joseph Collucci of New Philadelphia; and several nieces and nephews.
    She was the sister of the late Eleanore Corey, Catherine Wyld and Elizabeth Whetstone.
    Following cremation, an entombment service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday in the Cypress Columbarium of Swan Point Cemetery, 585 Blackstone Blvd., Providence, followed by a memorial service in the Swan Point Cemetery chapel.
    Arrangements are by the Hathaway Home for Funerals and Cremation Services, 1813 Robeson St.

    Rose P. Santos


    PLYMOUTH -- Rose P. (Costa) Santos, 80, of Plympton died at Jordan Hospital Tuesday, Jan. 20, 1998. She was the widow of Lawrence Santos and daughter of the late John and Francis (Pina) Costa.
    Mrs. Santos was born in Wareham and attended Wareham schools.
    She was a licensed practical nurse at Taunton State Hospital for 30 years and lived in Plympton 58 years.
    She enjoyed home shopping as one of her pastimes.
    Survivors include three sons, Lawrence Santos of Middleboro, Bobby Santos of Plympton and Roger Santos of Carver; and three daughters, Bertha Molina of Brockton, and Joan Perry and Irma Fernandes, both of Wareham.
    She was the mother of the late Gertrude Silva.
    The funeral will be at 9 a.m. Friday at the Cartmell Funeral Home, 150 Court St., followed by a Mass at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Carver.

    Herve R. Forcier


    FALL RIVER -- Herve R. Forcier, 83, of Highland Avenue, formerly of the Borden East Apartments, died Monday, Jan. 19, 1998, at Charlton Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Rita E. (Dunn) Forcier and son of the late Napoleon and Imelda (Vannier) Forcier.
    Mr. Forcier was a lifelong resident of Fall River who was a longtime communicant of St. Anne Church.
    He was employed for a quarter-century as a meat cutter with the First National Stores until his retirement in 1977. Previously, he worked in the same capacity with the Puritan Store in Fall River and later with Prevost Market. He was a member of the Amalgamated Meat Cutters Union of Boston.
    Mr. Forcier was employed for many years as a funeral assistant with Sullivan Funeral Homes Inc. of Fall River and Somerset.
    During World War II, Mr. Forcier was a civilian employee with the Navy Transportation Department at Quonset Naval Air Base in Rhode Island.
    Active in the Knights of Columbus, Mr. Forcier was a member of Fall River Council 86, being a past grand knight and serving until recently as secretary-treasurer. He was a member of the Bishop Stang Assembly, 4th-Degree Knights of Columbus, of which he was a past faithful navigator.
    A piano player with various musical groups in the Fall River area, Mr. Forcier was an active member of Local 216, American Federation of Musicians. He. was a member of the Holy Name Society of his parish, and for more than 20 years was a member of the St. Anne Church choir.
    Survivors include his widow; three sons, Herve F. Forcier of Maple Heights, Ohio, Richard F. Forcier of Peninsula, Ohio, and Paul J. Forcier of Uniontown, Pa.; two sisters, Lauretta Fletcher and Jeannette Couture, both of Somerset; a brother, Clarence Forcier of Fall River; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
    He was the brother of the late Fernand Forcier.
    The funeral will be at 9 a.m. Saturday from the Jeffrey E. Sullivan Funeral Home, 550 Locust St., with a Mass at 10 at St. Anne Church on South Main Street. Interment will be at Notre Dame Cemetery.

    Joseph Cabral


    RIDGEWOOD, N.H. -- Joseph Cabral, 85, of Attleboro, Mass., formerly of Shawmut Avenue, New Bedford, Mass., died Monday, Jan. 19, 1998, at Ridgewood Court Nursing Home. He was the son of the late Manuel and Julia (Augusta) Cabral.
    Born in New Bedford, he was a program worker with the federal government until his retirement.
    There are no immediate survivors.
    Graveside services will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at St. John Cemetery in New Bedford. Arrangements are by Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth St., New Bedford.

    Thomas J. McCann


    WAREHAM -- Thomas John "T.J." McCann, 42, of Onset, died at home Wednesday, Jan. 14, 1998, after a long illness. He was the longtime companion of Linda L. Fairclough and the son of Stephen McCann and the late Nancy (Reagan) McCann.
    Mr. McCann was born in New Bedford and lived in this area all his life.
    He was a communicant of St. James Church, New Bedford.
    Mr. McCann was a member of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, and was a commercial fisherman.
    He enjoyed camping, the outdoors, carpentry and spending time with his family and friends.
    Survivors include a daughter, Erin L. Fairclough of Onset; five brothers, Michael McCann, Sean McCann, Timothy McCann, Kevin McCann and Justin McCann, all of New Bedford; two sisters, Colleen Powers of New Hampshire and Patty Nadeau of Lakeville; and several nieces and nephews.
    A memorial service will be at noon Sunday at the Seaman's Bethel on Johnny Cake Hill, New Bedford.

    Joseph A. Gendron


    MELBOURNE, Fla. -- Joseph A. Gendron, 80, the former Eucharistic minister at St. Joseph Church in New Bedford, died Saturday, Jan. 17, 1998.
    Mr. Gendron moved to Brevard County from New Bedford, Mass., in 1986. He previously worked for My Bread Baking Co. and was the past president of the St. Joseph Couples Club.
    Survivors include a daughter, Elaine "Kiki" Steger of Melbourne; a son, Robert Gendron of Westport, Mass.; two sisters, Jeanette Sylvia and Georgette Giroux, both of New Bedford; two brothers, Raymond Gendron and Roland Gendron, both of New Bedford; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

    Leonel Hipolito


    NEW BEDFORD -- Leonel Hipolito, 66, of Acushnet, died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 1998, at St. Luke's Hospital after a brief illness. He was the husband of Muriel M. (Lainey) Hipolito and the son of the late Antone and Maria (Fortunada) Hipolito.
    He was born in Fall River and lived in Acushnet 37 years. He was a communicant of St. Francis Xavier Church, Acushnet, and was a maintenance worker at the Acushnet Co. Rubber Division for 30 years.
    Mr. Hipolito was a frequent candidate for the Board of Health in Acushnet. An Army veteran of the Korean War and a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Tuttle Post, he also belonged to the American Legion Post 265.
    Mr. Hipolito and his wife were married 42 years.
    Survivors include his widow; two sons, Mark Hipolito of Syracuse, N.Y., and Paul Brian Hipolito of Acushnet; two daughters, Joyce Nolin of Marion and Joann Hipolito of Fairhaven; a sister, Rosalina Isadore of Fall River; six grandsons; and several nieces and nephews.
    He was the brother of the late Alfred Hipolito.
    The funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Francis Xavier Church, Acushnet. Arrangements are by the Rock Funeral Home, 1285 Ashley Blvd.

    Mary A. McCarthy, 99


    NEW BEDFORD -- Mary Agnes (Harrington) McCarthy, 99, of New Bedford, died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 1998, at Hallmark Nursing Home. She was the widow of James J. McCarthy and daughter of the late Maurice and Bridget R. (Manley) Harrington.
    A lifelong resident of New Bedford, she was a communicant of Holy Name Church.
    Mrs. McCarthy formerly was a secretary for T.J. Moriarty Hardware and Steiger-Dudgeon in New Bedford.
    She was former member of the Guard of Honor Society at Holy Name Church.
    Survivors include a sister, Theresa M. Lyons of New Bedford; two brothers, Maurice T. Harrington of South Dartmouth, and John B. Harrington of Wallington, N.J.; and several nieces and nephews.
    She was the sister of the late Anna M. Harrington, Winifred B. Harrington, Nora Donaghy, Francis Harrington and Leo Harrington.
    The funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Holy Name Church.

    Maria Rego


    FALL RIVER -- Maria "Fernanda" (Botelho-Cabral) Rego, 68, of Third Street, died after a long illness Saturday, Jan. 17, 1998. She was the widow of Francisco Rego and daughter of the late Alfredo and Maria Isabel (Botelho) Cabral.
    Born in Capelas, Sao Miguel, Azores, she lived in Fall River 18 years and was a member of Santo Cristo Church.
    Mrs. Rego was employed by Reliable Sportswear Co. as a trimmer for many years until her retirement in 1994.
    Survivors include two sons, Antonio Rego of Swansea and Joseph Rego of Fall River; three daughters, Maria Eduarda Sousa and Fernanda Barata, both of Fall River, and Gilberta Carreiro of Alberta, Canada; three brothers, Jose Maria Cabral of Pawtucket, R.I., and Aurelio Cabral and Alfredo Cabral, both of Sao Miguel; four sisters, Gilda Sousa of Pawtucket, and Eduarda Botelho, Isabel Massa Botelho and Guiomar De Costa, all of Sao Miguel; eight grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
    The funeral Mass will be at 9 a.m. today at Santo Cristo Church.

    Robert C. Reinhagen Sr.


    WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- Robert C. Reinhagen, 76, of New Durham, N.H., formerly of Assonet in Freetown, Mass., died Friday, Jan. 16, 1998, at Winter Haven Hospital. He was the husband of Marjorie (Mendes) Reinhagen and son of the late Gustave and Eliza (Smith) Reinhagen.
    Born in Teaneck, N.J., he resided in New Durham since 1979.
    He owned and operated several businesses in Assonet, including Reinhagen's Market and Reinhagen's Transportation.
    A member of the Freetown Fire Department, he was one of the first emergency medical technicians in Massachusetts.
    Mr. Reinhagen was a World War II Coast Guard veteran.
    He was a member of the Farmington Advent Christian Church, a Mason with Fraternal Lodge No. 71 in Farmington, a member of the Bektash Temple AAONMS of Concord, Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, S.J., USA in Orlando, a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Milton, and a member of the American Legion in Farmington, honored member of the Coast Guard Combat Veterans Association, a member of the Northeast Chapter Destroyer-Escort Sailors Association, and a member of the Rochester Area Senior Citizens Inc.
    Survivors include his widow; three sons, Robert C. Reinhagen Jr. of Indio, Calif., William A. Reinhagen of Westfield, and Charles R. Reinhagen of Assonet; three daughters, Ruth Robbins of Goshen, N.Y., JoAnn Bromwell of Cummings, Ga., and Linda Medeiros of San Ramon, Calif.; a brother, George Reinhagen of Somerset; 14 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
    He was the widower of Ruth (Morrison) Reinhagen, and brother of the late Marion Elaine Harrison.
    The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Farmington Advent Christian Church, 35 Orange St., Farmington.

    Susanna Tavares


    FALL RIVER -- Susanna (Borges) Tavares, 84, of Weetamoe Street, died after a long illness Saturday, Jan. 17, 1998. She was the widow of John R. Tavares and daughter of the late Antone and Lucia (Lopes) Borges.
    Born in the Azores, she immigrated to Fall River at the age 6 and lived in the city until moving to Washington, D.C., where she lived 25 years. She returned to Fall River 27 years ago.
    She was a member of Holy Name Church.
    Mrs. Tavares was a buyer for Woodward & Lothrop department stores in Washington.
    Survivors include a brother, Antone Borges of Fall River; two sisters, Melody Messina of New Jersey and Leonore Borges of Fall River; and several nieces and nephews.

    Antone G. Sylvia


    BROCKTON -- Antone G. "Tony" Sylvia, also known as "Tut," 85, of New Bedford, died Monday, Jan. 19, 1998, at Brockton Veterans Administration Hospital. He was the son of the late Joseph G. and Thereza (Fontes) Sylvia.
    Mr. Sylvia was a lifelong resident of New Bedford, and was a communicant of St. Mary Church.
    He was employed by the New Bedford Department of Public Works until his retirement in 1974.
    Mr. Sylvia was a World War II Army veteran who participated in the Normandy invasion, and the campaigns of Northern France, the Rhineland, Central Europe and the Battle of the Bulge. He was a member of the 357th Infantry 90th Division and attained the rank of sergeant. Mr. Sylvia received the Purple Heart for wounds received on Nov. 15, 1944, in a fierce battle in the village of Budling.
    Survivors include two nieces and two nephews.
    He was the brother of the late Mary S. Almeida, Frank G. Sylvia and Joseph G. Sylvia, Jr.
    The funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Mary Church, Tarklin Hill Road, New Bedford.

    Jules L. Cayer, 98


    FAIRHAVEN -- Jules L. Cayer, 98, of Hemlock Point, Freetown, died Monday, Jan. 19, 1998, at Our Lady's Haven. He was the widower of Emma (Robitaille) Cayer, Lillian (Sicard) Cayer and Virginia (Fontaine) Cayer and son of the late Louis and Azilda (Desjardins) Cayer.
    Born in New Bedford, he lived in Freetown about 37 years until entering Our Lady's Haven in October 1995.
    He was a communicant of St. John Neumann Church and attended Mass daily. In 1997, he was presented with the Boston Post Cane as the oldest resident of Freetown.
    He worked in the New Bedford textile mills as a slasher tender until his retirement. He was a charter member of the League of The Sacred Heart at St. Anthony of Padua Church in New Bedford.
    During World War II, he made propellers for torpedoes at the Newport Naval Station. He worked at Freetown Town Hall for 10 years as a radio dispatcher for the police and ambulance service after retiring.
    He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed hunting with his beagles.
    He was proud of his relationship with his great-uncle Brother Andre, known to many as the Miracle Man of Montreal.
    Survivors include two daughters, Therese Kavanaugh of Dartmouth and Gabrielle Deane of Westchester, Pa.; two sons, Norman Cayer of New Bedford and John Cayer of Westport; three sisters, Bernadette Cayer of Dartmouth, Sister Jeannette Cayer of the Sisters of the Holy Cross in Manchester, N.H., and Aliette Hilston of Dover, N.H.; 14 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
    He was the brother of the late Gabrielle J. Cayer, Sister Anita Cayer, C.S.C., George L. Cayer, Joseph Cayer and Sam Cayer. He was the grandfather of the late Charles Cayer.
    The funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. John Neumann Church.

    Rodrigue M. Lussier


    NEW BEDFORD -- Rodrigue "Rod" M. Lussier of New Bedford died Monday, Jan. 19, 1998, at St. Luke's Hospital after a brief illness.
    He was the husband of Louise (Sirois) Lussier and the late Gertrude M. (Deasy) Lussier and was the son of the late Nalbert and Georgianna (Hainault) Lussier.
    A lifelong resident of New Bedford, Mr. Lussier was a member of St. Mary Church.
    He attended local schools and La Salette seminary in Enfield, N.H.
    He pursued specialized studies at the New Bedford Textile Institute, Northwestern University and Indiana University.
    After 34 years, he retired from the federal service as safety director of the naval base at Newport, R.I.
    During his federal service, he received several commendations and monetary awards for superior performance of duty.
    He was a member and chairman of the Providence Federal Safety Council and the North Atlantic Federal Safety Council. He was a member of the American Society of Safety Engineers and, after retirement, continued as a member emeritus of the International Organizations of Veterans of Safety.
    Mr. Lussier was a World War II Army veteran who served with the 91st Division, 362nd Infantry Regiment.
    He served in the North African and Italian campaigns. He received the Rifleman Badge, three campaign stars and was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in Italy. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, National Association of Retired Federal Employees Local Chapter 107 and the American Association of Retired People.
    After World War II, he was a volunteer worker for many years at Cathedral Camp, East Freetown. He assisted the camp director, the late Rev. William McMahon, in the re-opening and operation of the camp.
    After his retirement from federal service, he accepted employment at St. Mary's parish as a custodian and school bus driver, retiring after 17 years.
    Survivors include his widow; a daughter, Patricia Demanche of East Freetown; two stepchildren, Melissa Robitaille and Matthew Robitaille; three brothers, Gerard Lussier of Salem, Normand Lussier of San Diego, and Paul Lussier of Jacksonville, Fla.; two grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.
    His funeral Mass will be at 9 a.m. Friday at St. Mary Church.

    Kenneth E. McLeod


    WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- Kenneth E. McLeod, 70, died Sunday, Jan. 18, 1998, at Winter Haven Hospital. He was the son of the late Albert and Mildred (Colley) McLeod.
    Born in Brockton, Mass., he was a resident of Easton, Mass., for many years before moving to Wareham, Mass., where he summered and lived for more than 30 years. He moved to Winter Haven 10 years ago.
    A graduate of Oliver Ames High School in Easton, he was an office worker for the Massachusetts Department of Public Works for many years until he retired.
    He also ran the former family-owned McLeod's Cider Mill in Easton. He operated the Wareham Boat Yard on Rose Point before moving to Florida. He was member of the International Order of Redmen in Wareham, American Legion Post 8 in Winter Haven, and St. Paul Episcopal Church in Winter Haven.
    Survivors include two daughters, Janice Traina of Chatham, Mass., and Bonnie Reardon of Woburn, Mass.; a sister, Thelma Mullen of Easton; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
    The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at George L. Copeland & Son Funeral Home in Easton.
    Arrangements are by the George L. Copeland & Son Funeral Home, 38 Center St., Easton.

    Walton E. Westgate


    WAREHAM -- Walton Earle Westgate, 83, of Glen Charlie Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 1998, at Milbrook Nursing Home after a long illness. He was the husband of Norma (Braley) Westgate and son of the late Walton H. and Christina (Miller) Westgate.
    Born in Wareham, he lived in Whitman for 30 years while working at the Hingham shipyard during World War II. He moved back to Wareham 20 years ago and was a well-known bog owner in town. He also worked as a shipper-receiver for Carver Cotton Gin until he retired in 1977.
    Survivors include his widow; three daughters, Doreen McLaughlin of Carver, and Louise Scott and Linda Towne, both of Hanson; a sister, Sarah Cook of Onset; and eight grandchildren.
    The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Stott, Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Highway, which is handling the arrangements.

    Laurentina Lima


    NEW BEDFORD -- Laurentina (Pinheiro) Lima, 80, of New Bedford, died Monday, Jan. 19, 1998. She was the widow of Manuel Lima and daughter of the late Jose and Maria (Medeiros) Pinheiro.
    Born in New Bedford, she was a homemaker and a communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.
    Survivors include a daughter, Sandra K. Sullivan of Dartmouth; a sister, Lenora Louro of New Bedford; a grandson; and a great-grandson.
    She was the sister of the late Mary Gonsalves and Joseph Pinheiro.
    The funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.

    Laurence Fernandes, 52, noted fire investigator TIVERTON, R.I. -- Laurence Fernandes, 52, of Saxony Avenue, a prominent area fire investigator and lecturer, died Sunday, Jan. 18, 1998, at home after an illness. He was the husband of Marilyn E. (Cashman) Fernandes and son of the late Mario and Mary (Aguiar) Fernandes.
    Mr. Fernandes was born in Fall River, Mass., where he spent his youth before moving to Tiverton 26 years ago.
    Widely respected across the SouthCoast and New England as one of the foremost experts and authors in the field of arson investigation, he was vice president of the INS Investigations Bureau Inc. for 16 years. He retired in December due to illness.
    Mr. Fernandes wrote numerous works on arson. He also was deputy fire marshal for the Rhode Island fire marshal's office for four years and was a detective with the Tiverton Police Department for eight years.
    A 1963 graduate of BMC Durfee High School in Fall River, he was a 1969 graduate of what is now UMass Dartmouth. He held an associate's degree in criminal justice from Salve Regina University in Newport.
    He became certified in numerous fingerprint classification and examination courses, and advanced fire and arson investigation training seminars held throughout southern New England and at the National Fire Academy in Emittsburg, Md. Throughout his career, he attended many specialized fire behavior and investigative training courses in California, Connecticut and Georgia.
    Mr. Fernandes was a communicant of St. Madeleine Sophie Church in Tiverton. He and his wife shared a commitment to youth athletics and served as manager and coach of girls and boys softball, baseball and basketball teams in Tiverton for 10 years. They also participated in many Holy Ghost Sports Programs.
    Mr. Fernandes' many professional association memberships included the National Fire Protection Association, the International Society of Fire Service Instructors, the International Association and the Massachusetts and Rhode Island chapters of Arson Investigators -- the latter of which he was a founding director. He was a recognized expert, able to give testimony on fire origin and cause in both states. He also lectured extensively in his field of expertise.
    Survivors include his widow; a son, Thomas A. Fernandes of Fall River; two daughters, Julie E. Fernandes of Tiverton and Kimberly E. F. Mitchell of Fall River; two brothers, Mario Fernandes Jr. and Edwin Fernandes, both of Tiverton; a grandson; and several nieces and nephews.
    The funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Madeleine Sophie Church, 35 Lake Road.
    Arrangements are by the Cherry Place Home of Waring-Ashton & Coughlin, Sullivan-Driscoll, 178 Winter St., Fall River.

    BOSTON -- Paula Ann (Derrig) Strycharz, 47, of Falmouth, died Monday, Jan. 19, 1998, at New England Deaconess Hospital, after a short illness. She was the wife of George Strycharz, and daughter of Dorothy (Martin) McIlwaine and the late John J. Derrig, Sr.
    Mrs. Strycharz, formerly Mrs. Gagne, was born in Fall River, where she lived until 1994. While in Fall River she belonged to Holy Name Parish. She also belonged to St. Patrick's Parish in Falmouth.
    Mrs. Strycharz attended school in Fall River and was a 1968 graduate of B.M.C. Durfee High School. She also attended Bridgewater College.
    While in Falmouth, she worked at the family-operated Liam Maguire's Pub for several years. She also worked in the insurance business and at the YMCA in Fall River.
    She was an excellent cook, with an interest in culinary arts. She also hooked rugs avidly and enjoyed collecting antiques.
    Survivors include her widower; her mother; two daughters, Dawn M. Gagne of Atlanta, Ga., and Jennifer L. Aguiar of Fall River; two sisters, Diana D. Behn of Foxboro, and Deborah Maguire of Falmouth; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
    Mrs. Strycharz was the sister of the late John J. Derrig, Jr.
    Her funeral mass will be held 10 a.m. Friday in the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 584 W. Falmouth Highway, West Falmouth, which is handling the arrangements.
