Wonder Bowl Classic team wins junior tournament


The Southeastern Mass. Junior Bowling Association (SMJBA) All-Star Classic Tournament was held Jan. 10 at Wonder Bowl.
The 30-year-old tournament featured the highest averaged junior bowlers (junior, senior and major divisions) from the all of the junior bowling programs represented by the SMJBA.
The bowling centers represented were Wonder Bowl (New Bedford), Holiday Lanes in Westport, AMF Holiday Lanes in Somerset and AMF Taunton Lanes.
Each five-person team bowled a three-game qualifying round. The top-four teams as determined by scratch total pinfall advanced to head-to-head competition for two blocks of two games each.
This year's champions were the Wonder Bowl Classic team. The teammates were Amy Robinson, Kevin Silva, Brad Goodman, Gilbert Geer and Erik Weldon.
The runnersup were the Wonder Bowl A.M. team with teammates Julie Marks, Gerry Bonas, Billy Sorell, Joshua Carroll and Gabriel Miranda.
High game of the tournament was bowled by Jeffrey Melia, of Somerset, a 255. The high series was 671 bowled by Gilbert Geer that included 235 and 238 games. Joey O'Brien, of the Wonder Bowl P.M. team bowled a 251 game.
Also participating in this tournament for the fourth year was the bantam-prep (ages 11 and under) divisions.
The teams in this division bowled a two-game qualifying round. The top four teams by total scratch pinfall then met for two head-to-head one-game blocks.
The bantam-prep all-star champions were the Wonder Bowl A.M. team with teammates Michael Simas, Tim Camara, Scott Surprenant and Matt Hall.
The runner-up team was the Somerset Suburban team with teammates Mike Karr, Alizabeth Camara, Jenn Elisio and Erik Beaudoin.
Matt Hall bowled the high game of 225 and also two-game series, 375.

Tip of the week


If you don't slide as much as you'd like as your bowling shoes get older, make sure you have a wire brush handy.
You should wire brush the heels of your shoes regularly to clean them and to maintain a consistent slide.

The Mass. Women's Bowling Association (MWBA) 36th annual Championship Tournament is weekends from May 8 through June 13 at Brunswick Lowell Lanes. Entries close on Feb. 15.
Southeastern Mass. Bowling Association (SMBA) annual Championship Tournament is March 6-7 and 13-14 at AMF Holiday Lanes in Somerset. Entries close on Feb. 18.
Southern Bristol County Women's Bowling Association (SBCWBA) 9th annual Handicap Mixed Doubles Tournament is Feb. 6-7 at AMF Holiday Lanes in Somerset. Entry fee is $18 per bowler.

Highlights


Paul Arruda, in the Hughes & Carey Century 21 League at Holiday Lanes in Westport, bowled his first 300 game on Jan. 19.
Brian Alves, in the Acushnet Mixed League at Holiday Lanes in Westport, bowled his first 600 series, a 623 that included games of 203 and 222. He has a 175 average.
Billy Sorell, in the South Coast High School League at Wonder Bowl, bowled a 706 series that included games of 258 and 254.
Linda Pierce, in the N.B. Doubles League at Wonder Bowl, bowled a 644 series that was 128 pins over her series average. She earned the Women's International Bowling Congress (WIBC) 125 pins over series average award with games of 210, 211 and 223.
Joey Nereu, in the Twilight League at Wonder Bowl, bowled a 300 game on Jan. 15
Jerry Mahan, in the Jolly Rollers League at Wonder Bowl, bowled a 278 game that was 103 pins over his average.
Condolences to the family and friends of Dave Charette, 46, who died on Jan. 16 due to complications from a brain tumor. He was a member of the LaCava Bros. League at AMF Holiday Lanes in Somerset. Charette also was one of the five Charette brothers who traveled as a team each year to compete in the state tournament.
