    SANTA FE, N.M. -- Former Gov. Jack M. Campbell, a Democrat who served two terms in the 1960s, has died at 82.
    Campbell, who died Monday at a retirement home after a long illness, was governor from 1963 to 1966, enforcing a nonpartisan civil service for state employees and modernizing services for the mentally ill.
    He was the first New Mexico governor to appoint a science adviser.
    Before becoming governor, Campbell was a lawyer, a Marine during World War II, an FBI agent and speaker of the state House.
    He had a wide interest in space and technology and served on several boards that promoted development in those areas.
    Campbell is survived by four children.

    Catherine Galas


    NEW BEDFORD -- Catherine (Skrzyszewski) Galas, 82, of New Bedford died Friday, June 11, 1999, at St. Luke's Hospital. She was the widow of John W. Galas and the daughter of the late Joseph and Josephine (Krol) Skrzyszewski.
    Mrs. Galas was born in Acushnet and was educated and lived in New Bedford most of her life. She was a communicant of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church.
    She retired from States Nite Wear.
    Survivors include nieces and nephews, William King, Pearl Witt, Eleanor Cammarate, Robert P. King, Janet L. Martin, Alexander J. King Jr. and Cynthia Bessette; and a sister-in-law, Marion King.
    She was the mother of the late Sheryl Hansen and the sister of the late William King, Paul J. King and Alexander J. King.
    Her funeral Mass will be at 9 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church. Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery.
    Arrangements are by the Donaghy Funeral Home, 465 County St.

    Rosalina Viera


    NEW BEDFORD -- Private funeral services were to be held today for Rosalina (Fernandes) Viera, 86, of Dartmouth, who died Monday, June 14, 1999, at St. Luke's Hospital. She was the widow of Joseph N. Viera and the daughter of the late Manuel and Rosa (Clara) Fernandes.
    Born in Dighton, she lived in this area most of her life. She was a packer at fish houses in New Bedford.
    Survivors include a son, Richard of Brownsville, Texas; three daughters, Lucille Jardin of Marion, Sylvia Carritte of Brentwood, Tenn., and Sally McCoy of Dartmouth; three sisters, Sylvia Duarte of Martinez, Calif., Rose Pereira of California and Senhorina Gomes of Portugal; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
    She was the sister of the late Mary Gracia, Joseph Fernandes and Manuel Fernandes.
    Arrangements were by the Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth St.
    Burial was in Pine Grove Cemetery.

    FALL RIVER -- Angus A. Bailey Jr., 80, of Prospect Street died Saturday, June 12, 1999, at Charlton Memorial Hospital. A lifelong resident of Fall River, he was born Sept. 17, 1918, the son of the late Angus A. Bailey Sr. and Mary Heffernan Bailey. He was a 1935 graduate of BMC Durfee High School, where he was president of the Dramatic Society. He continued his education at Brown University, graduating Phi Beta Kappa and magna cum laude in 1939, and did graduate studies at Catholic University in Washington, D.C.
    In 1937, while a student at Brown, Mr. Bailey made his stage debut with the Little Theatre of Fall River, launching a theatrical career that would span more than six decades. He directed his first play for Little Theatre, "Ladies of the Jury," in 1947. He was president of Little Theatre for eight years, and until 1977 directed many of the group's productions. In recognition of his contributions to Little Theatre, he was awarded an honorary life membership.
    Mr. Bailey began his journalism career as program director at WSAR in Fall River in 1941. He remained with WSAR until 1953, when he moved to The Herald News of Fall River as a feature writer and editorialist. In 1960, Mr. Bailey became editor of the editorial page, and thereafter wrote virtually all of the newspaper's editorials until his retirement in 1988 at age 70. After his retirement, he continued to write a popular weekly film review for The Herald News.
    Mr. Bailey's theatrical career continued throughout his years at WSAR and The Herald News. In 1963, he wrote, directed and co-produced "Below the Hill," a feature film set in Fall River that appeared at the Venice Film Festival in 1964. From 1961-72, Mr. Bailey was the leader of the Brandeis University Women's Study Groups, delivering a popular series of literary lectures. In 1967, at the request of university President Joseph Driscoll, Mr. Bailey began a drama program at Southeastern Massachusetts Technical Institute, now UMass Dartmouth. He remained at UMass Dartmouth for 33 years as a professor of theater and staged 301 productions. For several years, Mr. Bailey also directed a successful summer theater at UMass Dartmouth that culminated in spectacularly popular outdoor musical productions in the amphitheater, free of charge to the public.
    He received a honorary doctor of humane letters degree from UMass Dartmouth in 1993 for being the guiding light of the theater company, instilling his love for the stage in thousands of university students. The New Bedford Festival Theatre Inc. presented him with its Theatre Achievement Award in 1995.
    Arts Unlimited of Fall River named Mr. Bailey its Man of the Year in 1996 for his outstanding contributions to the artistic community. In 1998, in recognition of his 32 years of exemplary service, UMass Dartmouth established the Angus A. Bailey Jr. Foundation for the Arts.
    He was a lifelong communicant of Holy Name Church.
    Survivors include a sister, Margaret J. Burke of Englewood, Fla., and Swansea; four nephews; and five great-nieces and great-nephews.
    His funeral will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at the "Cherry Place" Home of Waring-Sullivan-Ashton-Coughlin-Driscoll, 178 Winter St., followed by a Mass at 10 at Holy Name Church. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery.

    Francisco O. Vargas


    NEW BEDFORD -- Francisco O. Vargas, 76, of New Bedford died Tuesday, June 15, 1999, at St. Luke's Hospital. He was the husband of Maria (Goulart) Vargas and the son of the late Luisa (Oliveira) and Francisco O. Vargas.
    Born in Faial, Azores, Portugal, he lived in New Bedford since 1959. He was a communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.
    He was a self-employed cobbler until he retired.
    Survivors include his widow; three sons, Manuel G. Vargas of Fairhaven, Mario F. Vargas of Rochester and Francisco J. Vargas of Danvers; two daughters, Alda Vargas Roderiques and Lucia Vargas Williams, both of this area; three sisters, Lidia Oliveira of Faial and Maria da Conceicao Vargas and Irene DaSilva, both of New Bedford; 11 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
    His funeral Mass will be at 9 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.
    Arrangements are by the Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth St.

    Peter A. Schultz


    WAREHAM -- Peter A. Schultz, 51, of Uncatena Road, West Wareham, died Tuesday, June 15, 1999, at Tobey Hospital. He was the husband of Lorraine (Norton) Schultz and the son of Philip W. Schultz of Randolph and the late Blanche (Anderson) Schultz.
    Born in Dorchester, he attended the Randolph schools. He lived in Wareham 27 years and worked for the Army Corps of Engineers as a engineer technician for 25 years.
    He was a Vietnam War veteran.
    Survivors include his widow; his father; two sons, Patrick Schultz of Wareham and Peter A. Schultz Jr. of Winthrop; a daughter, Alissa Schultz of Wareham; a sister, Carol Terrio of Randolph; and two brothers, Philip Schultz of Maine and Robert Schultz of Randolph.
    His funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Patrick's Church. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery.
    Arrangements are by the Stott, Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Highway, Route 28.

    Thomas W. Wolfgang


    MELBOURNE, Fla. -- Thomas W. Wolfgang, 45, of Fairhaven, Mass., died Friday, June 4, 1999, at Holmes Regional Medical Center after a long illness. He was the son of William E. and Muriel E. (Hathaway) Wolfgang of Fairhaven.
    Born in New Bedford, he was a 25-year resident of Fairhaven and Cape Cod. He was a parishioner of St. Joseph's Church, Fairhaven.
    Mr. Wolfgang served in the Coast Guard and was a chef.
    Survivors include his parents; three brothers, Daniel C. Wolfgang and Michael J. Wolfgang, both of Fairhaven, and William M. Wolfgang of Highland Springs, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.
    His funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph's Church.
    Arrangements are by the Fairhaven Funeral Home, 117 Main St., Fairhaven.

    NEW BEDFORD -- Angelina T. (Bizzarro) Davidson, 70, of Austin Street died Sunday, June 13, 1999, at St. Luke's Hospital after a brief illness. She was the wife of James E. Davidson and the daughter of the late Francisco and Jovita (Oliveira) Bizzarro.
    She was a lifelong New Bedford resident and communicant of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church.
    She was formerly employed by Frionor, as a fish packer, and previously had worked as a housekeeper at Immaculate Conception Church for 10 years.
    Mrs. Davidson was a member of the Animal Audubon Society and was a former Red Cross volunteer.
    Survivors include her widower; a daughter, Melody Anne Sylvia of New Bedford; four sisters, Agnes Bizzarro of New Bedford, Marie Novia of Fairhaven, Edith Oliveira of Acushnet and Jovita Bizzarro of Portugal; two grandchildren, Angela Maria Bariteau and Adriana Francis Bariteau, both of New Bedford; and several nieces and nephews.
    Her funeral Mass will be at 8 a.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church.
    Arrangements are by the Cabral-Baylies Square Funeral Home, 512 N. Front St.

    Manuel O. Santos


    FALL RIVER -- Manuel O. Santos, 77, of Fall River died Monday, June 14, 1999, at Sunrise Healthcare Corp. after a long illness. He was the former husband of Albertina (Costa) Santos.
    Born in Fall River, the son of the late Amos O. and Evelyn (Correira) Santos, he lived in Connecticut for many years, resided in Westport for 13 years, then moved to Fall River.
    He attended St. George's Church, Westport.
    He was a laborer for various local construction companies until his retirement.
    Mr. Santos was an Army veteran of World War II.
    Survivors include a daughter, Bernadette Correira of North Dartmouth; four brothers, Antone "Sixteen" Santos, John "Sharky" Santos, Noel "Sonny" Santos and Amos S. Oliveira, all of Fall River; four sisters, Irene Ruddy, Alma Blais and Beatrice "PeeWee" Lima, all of Westport, and Georgianna Beene of Fort Smith, Ark.; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
    He was the brother of the late Lillia Cestodio.
    His funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. George's Church.

    Sister Agnes Jerome Kenney, 95


    TAUNTON -- Sister Agnes Jerome Kenney, 95, a Holy Union Sister and a member of the Holy Union Community at The Landmark, Fall River, died Tuesday, June 15, 1999, at Marian Manor after a brief illness.
    Born Mary Kenney in Randolph, the daughter of Thomas J. and Eliza Jane (McHugh) Kenney, Sister Agnes Jerome received all her early education there. She graduated from Stetston High School in 1921.
    She moved to Taunton, where she came into contact with the Holy Union Sisters for the first time. She entered the Holy Union novitiate in Fall River in 1924; she professed her first vows in 1926 and her perpetual vows in 1931.
    She furthered her education during the novitiate in Fall River and later at the College of the Sacred Hearts, Fall River. She also studied at the Providence Teachers College, where she earned a bachelor's degree in education. She later attended Springhill College in Alabama and Fordham University in New York.
    Sister Agnes Jerome taught at St. Rose School, Mon Luis, Ala.; St. Edward's School in Baltimore; St. Francis de Sales School in New York, N.Y.; and at Sacred Heart School and St. Mary's School, Taunton. She remained as school librarian at St. Mary's after her retirement from the classroom.
    In 1986, Sister Agnes Jerome retired and moved to Sacred Hearts Convent, Fall River. Recently, she moved to Marian Manor after a brief stay at The Landmark in Fall River.
    Survivors include her Holy Union Sisters.
    She was the sister of the late Thomas Kenney, John Kenney, James Kenney and Joseph Kenney.
    Her funeral Mass will be at 5 p.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Church, Linden Street, Fall River.
    Burial will be at 9 a.m. Friday in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Fall River.
    Arrangements are by the Jeffrey E. Sullivan Funeral Home, 550 Locust St., Fall River.

    Elizabeth F. Henderson


    FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- Elizabeth F. (Gamans) Henderson, 82, formerly of Fairhaven, Mass., died Thursday, June 10, 1999, at her daughter's residence. She was the daughter of the late Walter H. and Florine (DeWolf) Gamans.
    Born in Fairhaven, she was a 1934 graduate of Fairhaven High School.
    Survivors include two daughters, Jenifer R. Bradford and her husband, David, of Lauderdale-By-The-Sea, and Roxanne Nicewitz and her husband, Robert, of Fairhaven; a brother, Lloyd Gamans of Manchester, N.H.; a sister, Helen Hayden of Tamworth, N.H.; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
    Services will be private.
    Arrangements are by the Baird-Case/Jordan-Fannin Funeral Home.
