Children big winners in Schwartz Regatta
BARBARA VENERI, Sea Notes

More than 100 people feasted on chowder, hot dogs, hamburgers and more at the new clubhouse in the Fort Taber complex, as the Fort Rodman Marine Education Association/Low Tide Yacht Club raised more than $1,500 last Sunday to benefit the I. H. Schwartz Children's Center of New Bedford.
Six yachts raced in two classes over a course of 12 miles in Buzzards Bay outside New Bedford Harbor for the third Schwartz Regatta in the last four years (the race was canceled two years ago). Pieces of Eight, a spinnaker-class boat skippered by Mark Thornhill, battled down to the wire with the non-spinnaker SeeFest, captained by Ira Perry, for first place overall. Thornhill beat Perry over the finish line by eight seconds.
Regatta Committee chairman Paul Barton reported that the awards ceremony and cookout, held on the grounds of the FRMEA/LTYC new clubhouse in the Fort Taber complex, was a complete success, with Al Alves "world famous" chowder selling out quickly. Following the 12 noon start, the Buzzards Bay Blues Band provided the entertainment for the remainder of the afternoon.
Results for the 2002 Schwartz Regatta were:

Spinnaker class 1. Pieces of Eight, Thornhill, 01:47:03; 2. Dark 'n' Stormy, Ryan Walsh, 01:53:07.

Cruising class 1. SeeFest, Perry, 01:47:11; 2. Bandit, Manny Moniz, 02:08:34; 3. Nicola, Gene Monteiro, 02:11:12; 4. Miss Hannah, Ray Davignon, 02:16:40.

In addition to the regular Thursday evening racing schedule, the LTYC is planning a cruise to Martha's Vineyard July 13-14.

NBYC JUNIOR REGATTA

Junior sailors ages 8-18 are tuning up for the New Bedford Yacht Club Junior Regatta, scheduled for July 13-14.

Registration for up to 60 Optimists and 60 club 420s closes Saturday, July 6. Registration costs $50 for Optimist sailors and $80 for the 420s (late fees cost $10 per application postmarked after July 6).

The registration and entry fee includes two days of racing in Padanaram Harbor and Apponagansett Bay, lunches each day on the water, T-shirts, and a cookout Saturday evening following the day's races. Parents, siblings and friends may attend the cookout for an additional charge of $9.95 per person, $6 per child under 10.

Awards will be presented Sunday afternoon. The NBYC snack bar will be open for breakfast, lunch and dinner during the Junior Regatta.

SIEGAL, FLYNN TAKE 5TH

Sailing in what may be his last Junior race, local sailor David Siegal of Dartmouth and crew Andrew Flynn of Falmouth finished fifth overall in the U.S. Sailing Junior Championships double-handed Club 420 races held in San Diego, Calif., June 21-27.

The Siegal-Flynn combo finished second in the sixth, ninth and 10th races, and third in the fourth race. Light air in San Diego Bay -- an unfamiliar condition for both Siegal and Flynn who regularly compete in the breezy and choppy conditions of Buzzards Bay -- contributed to fluky starts and finishes in the four days of competition (three days were reserved for practices and workshops).

Despite sailing the wrong course in the first race, last year's runners-up, Frank Tybor and crew Jeffrey Boyd, roared back to win decisively in the 44-boat Club 420 division. Their total of 33 points was enough to capture the Manton Scott Trophy. Zack Brown and crew Melanie Roberts maintained second throughout the week and finished with 53 total points. Chris Lash and Blaire Herron finished 4th with 61 points, Siegal and Flynn took 5th with 80 points, and Tabor Academy's Ben Sampson and Michael Komar finished 6th with 89 points.
