Ben Bier and Luke Hubern command their Club 420S during last weekend's action at NBYC.
One-hundred and ten young sailors, ranging in age from 8 to 18, competed last weekend in Club 420s and Optimist dinghies in the waters outside the Padanaram Harbor breakwater in the 2002 New Bedford Yacht Club Junior Regatta. Heavy winds and choppy seas on Saturday cut down on the number of races, with a total of seven events for each class during the two-day regatta.
Finishing first overall in the 420 class were Eric Savery, skipper, and Meredith McGinley, crew, of the Wild Harbor Yacht Club in Falmouth, with a total of 16 points, although they did not finish first in any race. Placing second with 21 points were Justin VanDeinse and Vannessa Colesworthy of the Portland, Maine, Yacht Club, tied with Peter Bermudez and Gardiner Bowen of the NBYC, also with 21 points.
In the Red, White and Blue Optimist fleets, the overall first-place finisher was Coleman Bowen of the NBYC with 17 points, a Red fleet sailor. Second place overall went to Connor Watson of the Wild Harbor Yacht Club with 20 points (sailing and the Blue fleet), while Peter Pellegrini of the Plymouth Yacht Club placed third overall with 24 points (also racing in the Blue fleet).
In the Green Optimist fleet races for beginners ages 10-12, sailors from the NBYC captured the first five positions. Jamie Simmons placed first with 6 points; Philip Krause was second with 13 points; and Priscilla Tracy came in third with 21 points.
Club 420 sailor Matt Seelen of the Portland Yacht Club was unable to compete after getting hit on the head with the boom in the first race of the day Saturday, as heavy winds and choppy seas made sailing to windward a real challenge. EMTs treated Seelen at the NBYC dock before transporting him to St. Luke's Hospital, where he had stitches for a nasty cut on the forehead but was otherwise reported to be OK. His fellow crew member, Matt LaLumiere, was unhurt in the incident.
