Junior sailors showed their stuff
![]()
It was a great regatta.
People said so.
That's what a tired but happy New Bedford Yacht Club Junior Regatta chair Pam Bermudez told me after more than 100 young sailors between the ages of 8 and 18 competed for two days last weekend inside and outside the breakwater in Padanaram Harbor.
Veteran NBYC 420 skipper Zach Kavanaugh took first place in the 420 class after two solid days of racing with crew Gardner Bowen. The NBYC 420 boats captured five of the top ten slots in the 54-boat competition.
In the Green Fleet, Max Audette of the NBYC captured first place and Courtney Rocha, also of the NBYC, came in second.
"It went great," said Bermudez. "We had great weather."
Saturday, July 12, there were several capsizes to keep the chase boats busy as winds rose to 30 knots outside the harbor. Most of the capsize occurred with the 14-foot 420 class, raced by older sailors outside the breakwater.
The Green Fleet, 8-foot Optimist dinghies skippered by inexperienced racers, stayed inside the breakwater by Bay View and, said Bermudez, "they were fine."
She expressed thanks to Steve Downes and Mike Callahan of the NBYC Sailing School staff who helped run the races on the water and NBYC administrative assistant Carol Clermont who did all the scoring.
In addition to Regatta Chair Bermudez, other members of the 2003 NBYC Junior Regatta Committee were Janne Armstrong, registration; Tina Nauman, T-shirts; Roberta Burke, awards; Teri Bernert, publicity; and Jib Babbitt, support boats.

If you meandered down to the shores of Sippican Harbor in Marion last week, you probably caught sight of more than 100 sailors trailering and racing their lightweight Snipes sailboats in the Snipes National Regatta hosted by the Beverly Yacht Club. Racers were competing in the Crosby series, the Wells series, the Women's, Junior, and Heinzerling National championships.
Racers came from all over the U.S. and stayed with friends and volunteers from the BYC for the five days of racing. In addition to some wet and fast racing on Buzzards Bay in all kinds of weather, the visitors spent time getting to know their hosts and feasting on seafood at the BYC Water Street clubhouse.
The Snipes is a 15 ft. 6 in. hard chine-boat with 128 feet of sail area (main and jib). In Snipes racing, no spinnakers are allowed.
The Snipes web site provides excellent reports on the races and some great photographs of the events on the water. Check it out at www.snipeus.org, then click Regatta Reports.
ON TO MARION
The Beverly Yacht Club in Marion continues to be the center of national competition in the area this week as the club hosts the Bullseye National Regatta next weekend. Registration begins on Friday, July 25, followed by a social dinner at the club on Water Street. Racing gets under way on Saturday, July 26, and wraps up on Sunday, July 27. Bullseye racers from throughout the U.S. as well as local competitors plan to be on hand to race against each other and the wind and weather of Buzzards Bay.
Familiar throughout Buzzards Bay and on Cape Cod, the one-design Bullseye is a 15½ ft. fiberglass boat with a full lead keel, ideal for racing in the often choppy waters and somewhat heavy seas hereabouts.
If you are interested in racing next weekend, contact Jen Regan, Bullseye fleet captain, at Mregan@attbi.com for a notice of race and instructions, or check out the Bullseye Web site at www.shore.net/~bullseye.
To have another sailor captain your Bullseye or if you are seeking crew, contact Pam Norweb at pamnor@attglobal.net. Visiting Bullseye skippers are also seeking moorings in Sippican Harbor. If you have a mooring available the weekend of July 25-27, contact Phyllis Partridge at 508-291-1375 or contact the BYC office at 508-748-0540.
