Ocean State Job Lot to open in Fairhaven

FAIRHAVEN -- Ocean State Job Lot, which specializes in brand-name closeout merchandise, is opening a new store in Fairhaven Commons Plaza. The store will be located in the space formerly occupied by Stop & Shop supermarket, near the recently opened Marshalls store.

The grand opening for the store is set for 9 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 14.

Ocean State Job Lot sells electronics, housewares, lawn and garden items, stationery supplies, gourmet foods, sporting goods, toys, pet supplies, home decor, computer supplies and seasonal items.

According to a company release, the store is "not to be confused with general retailers. We concentrate on value rather than continuity of merchandise. ... The merchandise changes from week to week, based on opportunistic buys available."

Marc Perlman, president of Ocean State Job Lot, says many of the chain's other locations are in communities near the water, and Fairhaven fits the type of community Ocean State Job Lots does well in.

The Fairhaven branch will be the 51st store in the chain, which covers Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut. Each store has approximately 22,000 square feet and carries over 4,000 different items. There are Ocean State Job Lots in New Bedford on Kings Highway and on Rhode Island Avenue in Fall River.

Ocean State Job Lot was founded in 1977, with its headquarters and first store located in North Kingstown, R.I. The company's sales totaled approximately $200 million last year.
