Great conditions, good time at Buzzard regatta

The Buzzard had a great time in New Bedford last weekend.
The 24th annual Buzzard Hobie Cat Regatta sailed in light air Saturday, but the building southwesterlies on Sunday more than made up for any lack of wind the day before.
This year's Buzzard, sailed off East Beach near the entrance to Fort Taber in New Bedford's South End, provided the venue for the 2001 Division 12 championships. Hosted by Hobie Fleet 28, based in southeastern Massachusetts, the event brought more than 30 boats and at least twice that number of people to Fort Taber for two days and nights of racing, "fun" racing, after-race entertainment and camping.

The Buzzard Regatta, also known as the Steve Latham Memorial, is named after the former New England championship catamaran racer who died last year.
North American Hobie Cat Division 12 secretary and scorekeeper Mike Levesque praised Fleet 28 Commodore Doreen Coughlan and the members of the race committee for doing "a great job."
Event spokesman Bob Kunkel, had only words of praise for the city of New Bedford.
"We had great sailing conditions, great races and a fun beach party," he said. "Many people from New Bedford came by to ask us about the boats and the event."
"We are constantly trying to improve and expand the sport of catamaran sailing and sailing in general," he continued, adding that the city administration, police, firefighters and lifeguards helped the fleet make the event a success.
Among the top finishers were the team of Billy and Sue Guay from East Freetown, taking first place in the Hobie Cat Class 18A with 9 points. In the Hobie Cat 16C class, Brad and Keith Stalter from Acushnet took first place with 7 points, followed by Marie and Paul Henderson of Wareham in second place with 19 points. In the closely-raced Inter 20 ft. class, John Smith and John Swiniarski of Westport finished fourth with 26 pts.

Local yacht clubs are playing host to two championship races the weekend of August 11 and 12.
The Mattapoisett Yacht Club is host to the 80th annual Leo J. Telesmanick Beetle Cat championship races.
For 80 years, Beetle Cat enthusiasts have raced in the waters of Buzzards Bay and around Cape Cod. This year's New England Beetle Cat Boat Association (NEBCA) races are set for Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 11-12, in the following classes: Juniors (under age 19 during 2001), Women's, Men's, Old Salts (age 50 and over), and Ancient Mariners (age 60 and over).
Trophies will be awarded to the top three skippers and crew for each class.
The Leo J. Telesmanick Trophy will be awarded to the overall winner after two days of racing in and around Mattapoisett Harbor.
The Telesmanick Trophy is named after Leo J. Telesmanick who was a master boatbuilder and foreman at the Beetle family boatyard. Later, Telesmanick worked at Concordia Yacht Co. in South Dartmouth in the Beetle Cat Division.
Telesmanick, who was born in 1915, died in January. His sailing involvement included: co-founder of the Low Tide Yacht Club, and a member of the New Bedford Yacht Club, the New Bedford Port Society, the New Bedford Whaling Museum and Past Faithful Navigator of the Knights of Columbus, Fourth Degree, McMahon Council. Telesmanick was also a consultant to the Mystic Seaport Museum.

Also on tap for Aug. 10-12 is the 77th annual Herreshoff (H-Class) Championship Regatta, hosted by the Beverly Yacht Club in Marion.
Races are open to all H Class boat owners in both juniors (under age 19 in 2001) and adult classes.
Racing for juniors begins at 9 a.m. Friday, Aug. 10, while adult races begin at 8:30 a.m. both Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 11 and 12. To enter, contact Sue Butler at (617) 492-0014. Entry fees are $15 for adults and free for juniors. The BYC will provide box lunches ($7 if ordered ahead of time) and launch service, and competitors can have a dinner onshore for $30 Saturday, Aug. 11.
The H Class dates to 1914 with the older H-12s sporting wooden hulls and much-varnished brightwork. The newer H-12s, known as Doughdishes, are made of fiberglass, but maintain nearly all the classic rigging and brightwork of the early models. Several older model H boats are on permanent display at the Herreshoff Marine Museum in Bristol, RI.
