Regatta competition was fierce

Results from the Beverly Yacht Club Junior Regatta, one of the most popular area sailing events held Aug. 20 and 21 at the BYC's Water Street facility in Marion, are in.
Junior sailors -- many of them first-timers under 12 years old -- from Duxbury to New Bedford and from Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket and Cuttyhunk took part in as many as six races over two days.

The toughest competition came in the Opti Blue class, with only one or two points separating the 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th place finishers. Sam Harrison of Chappaquoit bested all 54 entrants in the Blue class with 21 points, placing 2nd in three out of six races.
Andrew Flynn of the Wild Harbor Yacht Club placed first overall in all Optimist boats with 5 points, placing first in six races.

    The prize for first place in the Ancient Mariners class of the New England Beetle Cat Boat Association regatta, held in Mattapoisett Harbor Aug. 11 and 12, was a Coachman clock, donated by the family of the late Herbert T. "Andy" Anderson, one of the founding members of the NEBCBA.
    Anderson's family donated the award especially for the 80th anniversary of the Beetle Cat and the 100th anniversary of the Mattapoisett Yacht Club.
    Roy Terwilliger of the Chatham Yacht Club won the award.

    Capt. Dolores Lewis of the West Marine store on Pope's Island doesn't fly south every winter -- she goes by boat. And, she wants to share some of the things she has learned in a series of seminars called "Follow the Sun: Helpful Tips to Make Your Trip South Fun!" She'll be conducting seminars at the following West Marine locations:

    Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI) will be hosting a six-session boating safety course at the Flannigan campus in Lincoln, RI. Classes begin Tuesday Sept. 4 and will be held for six weeks on Tuesdays from 7 to 9 p.m.
    The course emphasizes proper boat loading, use of life jackets, emergency rations, first aid, emergency signals and fire precautions.
