Bullseye! Long Island boat wins in Marion

Barbara Veneri A skipper from Fishers Island off Long Island, New York, won this year's Bullseye Nationals, hosted by the Beverly Yacht Club in Marion.
Dave Burnham, assisted by sons Paul and Steve, won the series "handsomely," according to a report by regatta co-chairs Joan Tiffany and Susan Mead. The two-day regatta took place in freshening breezes and three-foot seas the last weekend in July.
Twenty-four Bullseyes hit the starting line outside Sippican Harbor Saturday morning, July 26 in 18 to 24-knot southwesterlies, making for lively mark roundings and not a small number of collisions. Competitors came from the BYC, several Cape Cod yacht clubs, Fishers Island in New York, Squam Lake in New Hampshire, Rockport, Boston and Mattapoisett.
Several BYC sailors placed in the top ten, with Richard Pline placing 2nd, Wendy Goodwin 4th, Bob and Rick Stickles 5th, and Joan and Ed Tiffany 6th. Former BYC Commodore John Buckley headed up the race committee setting courses, marks and pacing the starts, generally heading the one-designs out on windward-leeward courses.
Other BYC members racing in the Bullseye regatta included Jack Rankin and Bill Moonan, Will Tifft, Suzanne McManmon and Susan Mead, Elizabeth and Bill Berry, Marcia Browne and Phyllis Partridge, Kathy Reed, Pam Norweb and Meg McCarthy, Chris Berry, Nanna Buckley, Lily Goldfarb and Jen Regan.
The Bullseye, crafted in fiberglass since 1949 after a 1914 wooden design by Nathaniel Herreshoff, is nearly 16 feet long at the waterline with a deep lead keel ideal for Buzzards Bay. The Cape Cod Bullseye, with marconi rig and self-tending jib, is manufactured at Cape Cod Shipbuilding in Wareham.
Next year's Bullseye Nationals are set to take place outside Rockport Harbor on Boston's North Shore.
