FAIRHAVEN -- The New Bedford-Fairhaven bridge was out of commission for about an hour last night due to an electrical problem.
According to town police, just before 10:30 p.m. the bridge operator couldn't fully close the bridge and traffic had to be turned away by Fairhaven and New Bedford police. Fairhaven police redirected traffic from Main Street, and city police stopped traffic at the Purchase Street intersection.
Although authorities said construction workers were on their way to repair the problem, which the bridge operator called "a minor breakdown," traffic was flowing again at 11:20 p.m.
Fairhaven police said the bridge, which underwent a $17 million rehabilitation project in May, had been operating fine for the past week. Since the initial repair three months ago, residents and businesses along Route 6 have criticized the bridge for its numerous breakdowns and its reportedly slow openings and closings.
