Pharmacies help support muscular dystrophy group

Pharmacies nationwide helped children with muscular dystrophy go fishing, swimming and camping last month.
Throughout the month, hundreds of independently owned Medicine Shoppe Pharmacies raised money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA), as part of MDA's Jerry Lewis "Stars Across America!" Labor Day Telethon. Contributions help MDA fund special summer camps where children and teenagers with neuromuscular diseases can enjoy outdoor activities. In addition, contributions provide ongoing medical care and research to help people with 40 neuromuscular diseases.
Participating stores raised money for MDA in a variety of ways. In many Medicine Shoppe Pharmacies, the bulk of donations will come from the pharmacy owners themselves, who have volunteered to contribute 10 percent of their sales of all non-prescription products sold during August. To help spur consumer interest, more than 100 Medicine Shoppe. Brand non-prescription products will be on sale all month at prices up to 50 percent off.
Many Medicine Shoppe Pharmacies will also collect contributions from customers. Some will offer custom-made mobiles for $1 MDA donations, which customers will be invited to sign for display in the pharmacy. Other pharmacies will offer American flag lapel pins for $1 donations.
In addition, customers can show their support for MDA by dropping a few bills or change into collection canisters located near the pharmacy's cash register. Some pharmacy owners have also obtained extra canisters to place in their neighboring businesses. This marks the third year The Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy franchise system has been a national sponsor and participated in fundraising activities. Over the past two years, the system has raised more than $600,000 for MDA. Pharmacy representatives will again appear on the national MDA Telethon, Sept. 1-2, to present this year's system pledge t~ Jerry Lewis.
MDA is a voluntary health agency working to defeat 40 neuromuscular diseases through programs of worldwide research, comprehensive services, and far-reaching professional and public health education. The Association's programs are funded almost entirely by individual private contributors.
The Medicine Shoppe Pharmacies' exclusive health care specialization allows the independent pharmacist/owners to offer pharmacy care tailored to their customers' individual health care needs. The pharmacies sponsor regular health care screenings and wellness programs, and accept most prescription insurance plans. Participation in MDA fundraising is another way The Medicine Shoppe Pharmacies demonstrate their commitment to important health care issues.
