Whaler's Race a success

Barbara Veneri
Twenty-five boatloads of hearty sailors competed in last weekend's Whaler's Race from the New Bedford Yacht Club around Block Island and back.
Race chairman Dr. Arthur Burke called the 105-mile race one of the fastest in the event's 70-year history. Yachts raced from outside the Padanaram Harbor breakwater to marks off Cuttyhunk, the Buzzards Bay Tower, Noman's island and around Block Island.
The first boat over the finish line was the multihull Triad, skippered by Tom Cox. Triad flew over the line just before 8 p.m. Saturday night, 11 hours 38 minutes and 20 seconds after the 8:10 a.m. start.
The last boat to finish crossed the line at 4:23:45 Sunday morning.
Dr. Burke's own J-44 Spice finished third in the spinnaker category on a corrected time of 13:06:46. Dr. Stanley Walsh of the Low Tide Yacht Club finished second in the non-spinnaker category in his Catalina 470 Makin' Progress.
Other local competitors included NBYC Commodore Peter Kavanaugh in his Pearson 36 Dog Fish Stu (4th place, non-spinnaker); the Mattapoisett Yacht Club's Jim Flaherty in his Valiant 37 J'Erin (5th, non-spinnaker); the NBYC's Henry DeGroot in his Sabre 38 Restless (6th, non-spinnaker); and Gil Canastra of the LTYC in his Islander 40 Zara (7th, non-spinnaker).
The NBYC picked up first and second places in the spinnaker-double category, with Dimitri Antoniadis in his Beneteau 45 Spirit taking first and Victor Pinheiro in his Aerodyne 38 Alegria coming in second.
Competitors faced a 10-knot wind blowing from the west-southwest early in the race as they beat out to Sow and Pigs Reef. The wind picked up to 15 to 20 knots later on Saturday and shifted to south-southwest.
Awards in each category will be presented at the NBYC annual awards dinner on Friday, Nov. 1.

The Whaling City Rowing Club (WCRC) tries to stay out of the water hazards as they host the Coxwain and Oar charity golf tournament Monday, Oct. 7, to benefit the organization's youth programs.
Over the past year, WCRC members have taught more than 100 young people how to row a whaleboat in New Bedford Harbor in their after-school and summer school programs.
According to WCRC Director Lucy Iannotti, many of the young people who learn to row through the club are experiencing the harbor for the first time in their lives.
These children "learn about their maritime heritage, their environment, teamwork, and the importance of physical fitness," she said.
Sponsorship levels include: Corporate Foursome, $300; Individual Golfer, $80; Green Sponsor, $150; Closest to the Pin Prize Sponsor, $100; Longest Drive Sponsor, $100; Cart Sponsor, $50. Individual tickets for the after-tournament cocktail party cost $50.
Registration begins on Oct. 7 with registration at 11 a.m. at the Reservation Country Club in Mattapoisett. Tee time is at noon with a full-scramble format. For more information, contact the WCRC at 508-997-4393 or by e-mail to ">lucy@whalingcityrowing.org.
