Young sailors shine in championships

SEA NOTES
The final standings in the Southern Massachusetts Sailing Association championships have been compiled, and several young sailors from the SouthCoast fared quite well.
In the Optimist Green Fleet for sailors just starting out, Allie Cunningham of the Beverly Yacht Club placed ninth while brother Will placed 19th. Lily Siegel of the New Bedford Yacht Club placed 27th out of more than 40 young sailors from yacht clubs on the South Shore, SouthCoast, the Cape and the Islands.
In the SMSA Optimist Red, White and Blue fleet championships, the highest area finishers were Max Audette of the NBYC, who placed third in the White fleet, Genoa Warner, also of the NBYC, who placed sixth in the Red fleet, and William Godfrey of the BYC, who placed sixth in the White fleet.
Cara Valvolotis from the BYC finished 10th in the Red fleet, while Chris Cunningham of the BYC placed 15th. Also in the Red fleet, Priscilla Tracy of the NBYC placed 17th, Declan Kelleher of the NBYC was 23rd, and Lauren Burke of the NBYC was 26th. The BYC's Drew Miller placed 28th in the Red fleet, followed by fellow BYC racers Joseph Burnett in 31st and Ned Havel in 32nd.
In the Blue fleet, BYC racer Trace Smith placed 16th, followed by fellow BYC competitors Colby Valvolotis in 21st place, William Sternberg in 28th and Hunter Sherman in 33rd. Kara Linn, also of the BYC, placed 41st.
There were more than 100 young sailors competing in the Red, White and Blue fleets throughout the southern Massachusetts area.
In the Club 420 Team Racing championships, the Beverly Yacht Club finished fifth, followed by the New Bedford Yacht Club in 10th place out of 24 area yacht clubs fielding teams for the SMSA championship standings.
HIGH TIDE PARTY
A High Tide Cocktail Party, set for 5 p.m. Oct. 6 at the Reservation Golf Club in Mattapoisett, will feature some fantastic raffle prizes.
The High Tide party is scheduled immediately following the Low Tide Golf Tournament.
Lest you think you are reading the golfing column and not the boating column, the Low Tide Golf tourney benefits the Whaling City Rowing Club youth rowing programs.
At the party, you can purchase tickets to win one of the following prizes: sunset cruise of New Bedford Harbor for 10 people aboard the tour boat Acushnet; wine tasting and tour for 10 people at the Westport River Vineyards; an annual family membership to the Schooner Ernestina; a "behind-the-scenes" tour of the Buttonwood Park Zoo; an annual family membership to the New Bedford Whaling Museum; 18-hole round of golf for four people with carts at the Reservation Golf Club; 18-hole round of golf for four with carts at the Allendale Country Club.
Tickets to the cocktail party cost $25; raffle tickets are three for $5 or seven for $10. You can purchase tickets by mail by sending a check to the Whaling City Rowing Club, 5 Dover St., New Bedford, MA 02740 (make check payable to the WCRC, and indicate the number of tickets you want). Cocktail party tickets will be held at the door (none will be mailed), and raffle tickets purchased ahead of time will be entered for you. You need not be present to win a raffle prize.

ROUND-THE-BAY
Fourteen boats started and 11 finished the first annual Mattapoisett Yacht Club Fall Round-the-Bay race, held Sept. 13.
The pursuit format race took competitors from the start/finish line off Ned's Point to points south of Bell No. 10 and the Weepeckit islands and points north of Cleveland Ledge Light and Angelica Point.
Finishing first overall and first in the Racing division was the Low Tide Yacht Club's Ryan Walsh, skippering Makin' Progress. He was followed by the Beverly Yacht Club's Ted Severance in Sequoia and the New Bedford Yacht Club's Dave Collins in X-Dimension. Finishing fourth overall and first in the Cruising division was the MYC's Bob Warren in his Dufour 38 In Deep.
The MYC's Tom Muldoon in Revelation finished first in the short-handed division.
