Bertha Frias
NEW BEDFORD -- Bertha (Viveiros) Frias, 74, of Sprague Street, Fall River, died Saturday, Sept. 5, 1998, at St. Luke's Hospital. She was the wife of John Frias and daughter of the late Joseph Pontes Viveiros and Mary (Amorin) Viveiros.
Mrs. Frias was born in Fall River, where she lived most of her life.
She was a homemaker and a member of Santo Christo Church in Fall River.
Survivors include her widower; two daughters, Natalie Mailloux of Fall River and Elaine Frias of Palm Coast, Fla.; a son, John Frias Jr. of Fall River; a brother, James Viveiros of Enfield, Conn.; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was the sister of the late Mary Pacheco.
The funeral will be at 8 a.m. Wednesday at the Oliveira Funeral Home, 215 Columbia St., Fall River. A Mass will follow at 9 at Santo Christo Church, Columbia St., Fall River.
Sophie C. Sylvia
ROCKY MOUNT, Va. -- Sophie C. Sylvia, 84, of Hardy, formerly of New Bedford, Mass., died Wednesday, Sept. 2, 1998, at Franklin Health Care Center after a brief illness. She was the widow of Leon E. Sylvia and the daughter of the late Manuel Caton and Rose (Jacintho) Amaral.
She was born in New Bedford and lived in the area most of her life before moving to Virginia to be with her family.
Survivors include a daughter, Joyce C. Rezendes of Virginia; a stepson, Kenneth Sylvia of California; two stepdaughters, Anne Swim and Norma Meehan, both of Colorado; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Arrangements are by Aubertine Funeral Home, 129 Allen St., New Bedford.
Gloria Andrews
NEW BEDFORD -- Gloria Andrews, 73, of New Bedford died at home unexpectedly Friday, Sept., 4, 1998. She was the daughter of the late Oswald and Grace (Perry) Andrews.
Ms. Andrews was a lifelong resident of New Bedford and a communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.
She formerly was a clerk at Lincoln Department Store. She also volunteered at St. Luke's Hospital.
She was a member of the Daughters of Isabella of Mount Carmel Church.
Survivors include several cousins and friends.
The funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.

Alfred F. Medeiros
FLORIDA -- Alfred Furtado Medeiros, 70, of Dade City, Florida died unexpectedly Monday, Aug. 6, 1998, at Pasco Community Hospital. He was the husband of Beverly Medeiros of Dade City and son of the late Mary (Dias) and Joseph Furtado.
Born in New Bedford, Mr. Medeiros moved from Fairhaven to Florida 12 years ago, where he was a member of St. Rita Catholic Church.
Mr. Medeiros was a World War II Navy veteran, and was employed at Walpole State Prison.
Survivors include a daughter, Josephine Medeiros of Dade City; a sister, Alice Oliveira of New Bedford; and a nephew, Paul J. Oliveira of New Bedford.
Relatives and friends are invited to a memorial Mass at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 13, 1998 at Hedwig Church.
Arrangements were made in Florida.
Mary J. Vinho-Simms
DARTMOUTH -- Mary J. (Ferreira) Vinho-Simms of S. Dartmouth, formerly of New Bedford and Nantucket, died at home Sunday, Sept. 6, 1998, after a brief illness. She was the widow of Manuel Vinho and Morris Simms, and daughter of the late Antone and Mary J. (Souza) Ferreira.
Mrs. Vinho-Simms was born in Sao Miguel, Azores and lived in the New Bedford area most of her life.
She was a communicant of St. Mary Church, South Dartmouth.
Mrs. Vinho-Simms was employed by the Sears Roebuck Co. as a salesperson for 20 years until her retirement.
She was a volunteer for the Red Cross for several years.
Mrs. Vinho-Simms enjoyed sewing, and was dedicated to raising her children and grandchildren.
Survivors include a daughter, Violet N. Tracey of Dartmouth; a brother, Joseph Ferreira of Florida; three sisters, Olive Figuerido of New Bedford, and Germaine Ferreira and Natalie Ferreira, both of Dartmouth; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was the mother of the late Gloria Driscoll, and sister of the late Charles Ferreira and Gloria Desrochers.
Arrangements are by the Austin-Carney Funeral Home, 549 County St., New Bedford.
Lillian Campbell
NEW BEDFORD -- Lillian Campbell, 75, of New Bedford, formerly of Dartmouth and Taunton, died Thursday, Sept. 3, 1998 at the Kristin Beth Nursing Home. She was the daughter of the late Gertrude Campbell
Born in New Bedford, she lived in Taunton during her younger years. Ms. Campbell returned to New Bedford 2½ years ago after living in Dartmouth for almost 30 years.
Survivors include many cousins, nieces and nephews.
She was the sister of the late Betty Campbell, Gwen Saunders, and Frank Campbell.
A graveside funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Rural Cemetery, New Bedford.
