    Cities plan economic summit

Mayors wants leaders to outline plan for region

Photo By John Estrella, Standard-Times staff writer

DARTMOUTH -- The mayors of New Bedford and Fall River yesterday announced a summit on economic development and education that will include 150 of the cities' leaders and the region's Congressional delegation.
The summit's organizers hope it will especially make an impression on Acting Gov. A. Paul Cellucci, who is facing a primary challenge on Tuesday but is the front-runner to win his party's nomination. He will likely be seeking political support in the region even as its agenda is formally outlined at the summit Sept. 29.

The suspense will soon be over. Special Prosecutor Kenneth Starr has turned over the top-secret findings from his grand jury investigation of President Clinton to Congress.
Now, all We the People need do is sit back and wait. Wait for the leaks.
If past experience is any indicator, we won't have to wait long. Ever since the Prez first spoke of "That Woman" Monica ( and denied that he'd had anything to do with her), we've been gobbling up a steady stream of "confidential" testimony.

Yeltsin taps foreign minister to end crisis

By Greg Myre, Associated Press writer

MOSCOW -- Boris Yeltsin stepped back from confrontation yesterday and named a compromise candidate for prime minister, defusing a power struggle that stalled efforts to rescue Russia's economy. His choice: Yevgeny Primakov, Russia's tough-talking foreign minister and a former spy chief.
Parliament, despite its hostility to Yeltsin, is expected to quickly approve Primakov even though he has little economic experience to face a nation impatient for a way out of its political and economic chaos.

    New depression drug shows promise

By Lauran Neergaard, Associated Press writer

WASHINGTON -- An experimental drug appears to alleviate depression by blocking a mysterious brain chemical -- one that until now, doctors didn't even know was at work in mental disorders.
The finding by Merck & Co., published in today's edition of the journal Science, could give doctors the first entirely new way to treat depression in decades, offering hope to patients who get no help from today's therapies such as Paxil and Prozac.

Lack of rancor marks Democratic race for governor

By Patrick Collins, Ottaway News Service

BOSTON -- In a year when personal attacks and nasty campaigning have characterized some of the state's top races, the Democratic contest for governor is something even Miss Manners could love.
The race's front-runner, Attorney General Scott Harshbarger, has largely ignored his opponents in favor of targeting the acting governor, A. Paul Cellucci.

By Martin Finucane, Associated Press writer

BOSTON -- Treasurer Joe Malone yesterday denied any role in digging up the credit reports of acting Gov. Paul Cellucci, his opponent in the race for the Republican gubernatorial nomination.
"Absolutely, I'm denying that we had anything to do with it," Malone said.
"Paul Cellucci, if he's got one shred of evidence ... ought to speak up," he said.

By Bruce Meyerson, Associated Press writer

Written on the wind: Kites, faith and memories sustain grieving dad

Photo By Elizabeth Rau, New England Wire Service

When Val Tremblay died on March 15, 1995, after a long bout with hepatitis, his father, Rene Tremblay, was at his bedside in a hospital in Fort Myers, Fla., washing the crust off his only son's eyes and singing religious hymns.
A few days later, Tremblay returned home to Fall River with two things: his son's ashes and his 15 kites. One afternoon, he took the kites to Brenton Point State Park in Newport, R.I., where the father and son used to fly them together, and let the wind carry them high. Grains of Florida sand spilled from Val's kites onto the grassy hill dotted with dandelions. Tremblay tried not to cry.

    Hiking trails on the Web

By Victor Mather, The New York Times

Hiking the entire Appalachian Trail is a daunting task. Walking 2,160 miles in the woods in six months while carrying a heavy pack can make one feel far removed from modern conveniences, like showers, television and computers.
But nothing escapes the Web. There are sites catering to "through hikers," those who attempt to walk the entire trail, usually going from south to north, and to the less ambitious day hikers. This year's successful through hikers, who started in February or March, will be finishing in the days and weeks ahead.

It is the year 2000 and what a year it's been in the NFL.
Peyton Manning and Ryan Leaf are both threatening to not just break Dan Marino's 14-year-old record of 48 touchdown passes in a single season, but obliterate it. Manning and Leaf have each thrown 44 TD passes with three games to go.
"It's exciting, isn't it?" beamed NFL acting commissioner Bob Kraft. "This is great for football and great for the country. The world is watching. The people in Indianapolis and San Diego should be very proud."

Photo By Steven Krasner, New England Sports Service

Mo Vaughn's No. 1 priority is to help the Boston Red Sox get into the playoffs and win the World Series.
His main value to the Red Sox is hitting home runs and driving in runs.
Vaughn, for the most part this season, has lived up to offensive expectations. He has 35 homers, which is a respectable total, even if Mark McGwire did just set a new standard with his 62nd.

Land trusts' noble mission: private effort, public benefit

At one time or another we've heard boasts about somebody's property being located right next door to a nature preserve or open land held by a trust. "It's like we own it" was one comment heard recently. Real estate agents use it as a selling point, assuring home buyers that no new development will encroach on their peaceful surroundings.
Conversely, not knowing what might happen to a big piece of open land next door can be a worrisome experience, especially when the developers finally move in and change everything forever.

    Clinton should not resign presidency

    WASHINGTON
Nervous-Nellie candidates, hand-wringing opinion mongers, and parents doing a national slow burn should stop calling on President Clinton to resign. Quitting under 36 boxes of evidence is not The American Way.
Nor is it in Bill Clinton's character. The most authentic moment of his presidency was his defiant assertion last month of wrongdoing and victimhood. With no phony lip-biting or spurious apology, he delivered his essential message: I regret that I was caught, but it's my private life so get over it.

Hateful and vicious critics sowing seeds of a tragedy

AUSTIN, Texas What a jumbled holiday weekend that was, marked by brilliant sports and miserable politics. There was Mark McGwire, so classy, so terrific -- the lovely gestures to the Maris family, his joy in his son, his delight in the birthday present for his dad, so grateful to St. Louis. You couldn't have asked for better.
And Sammy Sosa, what grace, what style -- especially the hilarious riff on the old "Saturday Night Live" routine, "Beisbol bin berry, berry good to me," at which he and McGwire collapsed in laughter. And special credit for supreme class goes to fan Mike Davidson and groundsman Tim Forneris, who simply gave the 61st and 62nd home run balls back to McGwire. The salute from the Blue Angels, the St. Louis fans cheering for Sosa -- all of it was perfect.

    NEW YORK
A colleague here at the Urban League's national headquarters in New York told me this story: He had just left his home in Brooklyn on his way to the nearby subway stop when a man called to him from across the street. "Oh, sir! Oh, sir!" the man said.
My colleague crossed the street warily, since he didn't recognize the man. It was only when he got closer and saw that the man was holding out his right hand that he recognized him as the fellow who for months had been standing at the entrance to the subway stop asking people for "spare change. Anything at all." My coworker was one of those who every morning gave the man a dollar.
