    NEW BEDFORD -- Dorothy May (Correia) Brown, 70, died at Thursday, Sept. 10, 1998, at St. Luke's Hospital, after a brief illness. She was the widow of Herbert F. Brown and daughter of the late Georgianna (Botelho) and Manuel Correia.
    She was a lifelong New Bedford resident and communicant of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception Church.
    She was a roller cleaner at Hoosac Mills until retiring.
    Survivors include three daughters, Charlene Brown Sousa, Donna Brown and Denise Ginn, all of New Bedford; a sister, Alice Simmons Almeida of New Bedford; two granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews.
    She was the sister of the late Manuel Correia.
    A funeral Mass will be at 9 a.m. Saturday in Our Lady of Immaculate Conception Church.
    Arrangements are by the Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth St.

    NEW BEDFORD -- Filento A. "Felix" Goes, 72, died at St. Luke's Hospital, Thursday, Sept. 10, 1998, after a brief illness. He was the husband of Lillian (Cabral) Goes and son of the late Aurora (daCosta) and Jose Pacheco deAndrade Goes.
    Born in Falmouth, he lived most of his life in New Bedford and was a communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.
    Mr. Goes was a New Bedford police officer until retiring. He most recently was a bus driver for Tremblay Bus Lines.
    He was a World War II Army veteran and a member of the Disabled American War Veterans, American Portuguese War Veterans Association, Knights of Columbus McMahon Council, Mount Carmel Senior Associates and the Retired State, County, Municipal Association.
    Mr. Goes was an avid golfer and sang in the choir at St. Mary Church, Dartmouth.
    Survivors include his widow; a daughter, Kathleen A. Goes of New Bedford; his stepmother, Irene Goes of Fall River; a brother, Carmin Goes of Dartmouth; four sisters, Beatrice Jackson, Caroline Cardoza and Alice Botas, all of New Bedford and Ida Costa of Fall River; several nieces and nephews; and a godson.
    He was the brother of the late Belle Barros.
    Mr. and Mrs. Goes celebrated there 50th wedding anniversary in April.
    A funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.

    Alfred F. Medeiros


    DADE CITY, FLA. -- Alfred Furtado Medeiros, 70, formerly of Fairhaven, died unexpectedly Thursday, Aug. 6, 1998, at Pasco Community Hospital. He was the husband of Beverly Medeiros and son of the late Mary (Dias) and Joseph Furtado Medeiros.
    Born in New Bedford, he lived in Fairhaven and moved to Florida 12 years ago. He was a communicant of St. Rita Church, Florida.
    Mr. Medeiros was formerly employed at Walpole State Prison. He was a World War II Navy veteran.
    Survivors include his widow; a daughter, Josephine Medeiros of Dade City; a sister, Alice Oliveira of New Bedford; and a nephew.
    A memorial Mass will be at 9:30 a.m. Sept. 13 in St. Hedwig Church, New Bedford.
    Arrangements are by the Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth St.

    Russell B. Cochrane


    SWANSEA -- Russell B. Cochrane, 78, of Ralph Chapman Road, died at home, Wednesday, Sept. 9, 1998, after a brief illness. He was the husband of Louise G. (Gendreau) Cochrane and son of the late Benjamin R. and Matilda (Bergeron) Cochrane.
    Born in Plymouth, he spent his youth in Fall River, moving to Swansea in 1952. He was a communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Church.
    Mr. Cochrane was a 1938 graduate of B.M.C. Durfee High School and a graduate of F.G. Allen Business School, both Fall River.
    For 20 years, he owned and operated the Cochrane Insurance Agency in Swansea before affiliating with the Frank Smith Insurance Agency in 1978, continuing as a principal of the firm which became known as Smith-Cochrane Insurance Agency.
    He was a member of the state and national professional insurance agent associates and represented over 25 insurance companies. He also held a real estate brokers license and was a member of the Greater Fall River Board of Realtors Multiple Listing Services, and the Massachusetts and National Associations of Realtors.
    He was a charter member of the Bishop Cassidy Council, Knights of Columbus and the American Legion Post 303, both in Swansea. He was an avid bowler and he and his wife belonged to the Swansea League at the Dudek Alleys in Warren.
    He was well-known for his outstanding friendly manner, and was referred to as "Mr. Congeniality" by his many friends and business associates. He was thoroughly devote to his children and grandchildren.
    He enjoyed horseshoes, golf and cribbage, especially in the company of his friends. He was an avid Boston Red Sox fan.
    Survivors include his widow; two daughters, Margo C. Fay of Little Compton, R.I. and Anne M. Reid of Bridgewater; a son, Paul A. Cochrane of Waldo, Maine; a sister, Dorothy Wholey of Fall River; and six grandchildren.
    A funeral Mass will be 9 a.m. Saturday in Our Lady of Fatima Church.
    Arrangements are by the 'Birchcrest' Home of Waring-Sullivan & Ashton-Coughlin-Driscoll, 189 Gardners Neck Road.

    David J. Lanza


    BEDFORD -- David J. Lanza, 43, formerly of Wareham, died unexpectedly Wednesday, Sept. 9, 1998. He was the husband of Vivian (Lima) Lanza and son of Essio and June Lanza of Wareham.
    Born in Wareham, he was a 1972 graduate of Upper Cape Regional Vocational Technical School and a graduate of California Poly Technical Institute, Pomona, Calif., with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering.
    He was a career Air Force officer and retired with the rank of captain from Hanscom Air Force Base in 1996.
    At the time of his death, he was employed as an electrical engineer with Information Spectrum of Bedford.
    Survivors include his widow and parents; a son, Eric J. Lanza of Bedford; a daughter, Sabrina Lanza, of Bedford; three brothers, Mark J. Lanza of Waltham, Jeffrey P. Lanza of Brockton and Philip A. Lanza of Wareham; and two sisters, Faye J. Lanza of Sagamore and Gina R. Coates of Taunton.
    A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday in the Church of the Nazarene, 100 Rogers Ave., East Wareham.
    Arrangements are by the Bedford Funeral Home, 167 Great Rd.

    Rosanna Silvia


    FALL RIVER -- Rosanna Silvia of Fountain Street died Thursday, Sept. 10, 1998, at St. Anne's Hospital after a long illness.
    A lifelong resident of Fall River, she was the daughter of the late Casmiro and Julia (Cabral) Silvia. She was a communicant of Santo Christo Church.
    Ms. Silvia worked for many years as a machine operator in the garment industry until her retirement.
    Survivors include a sister, Agatha "Pearl" Silvia of Fall River; several nieces and nephews; several great-nieces and great-nephews and several great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.
    She was also the sister of the late Estelle Almeida, Louise Warhall, Lucy Pavao, Manuel "Smiley" Silvia, Casmiro Silvia and Mariano "Jack" Silvia.
    A funeral Mass will be at 9 a.m. in Santo Christo Church, Columbia Street.
    Arrangements are by the Oliveira Funeral Home, 215 Columbia St.

    Eddie P. Crouse


    WAREHAM -- Eddie P. Crouse, 83, of Wareham and Florida, died Thursday, Sept. 10, 1998, at Tobey Hospital.
    A former Middleboro resident, he was the widower of Marion C. (Hatfield) Crouse, who died Dec. 1, 1995.
    He was born in Littleton, Maine, the son of the late William and Amelia (Brewer) Crouse. He served in the Navy during World War II. After the war, he returned to the area, building many homes as a carpenter. He was a resident of Middleboro for 50 years, living in a home that he had built.
    After his wife's death, he lived with his daughter, Charlotte L. Roberts, in Wareham during the summer. He lived in Dania, Fla., in the winter.
    He was a lifetime member of Nickerson Post 64 American Legion, where he was a member for 54 years. He was a past commander of Nickerson Post and a past Tenth District commander.
    His hobbies included fishing, gardening and bowling.
    Survivors include his daughter; a brother, Irving Crouse of Houlton, Maine; a sister, Mattie Watson of Houlton; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
    A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Ashley Funeral Home, 35 Oak St., Middleboro.

    Joao Sousa Arruda


    FALL RIVER -- Joao "Sebastao" Sousa Arruda, 73, of Old Bedford Road, Westport, died Thursday, Sept. 10, 1998, at Charlton Memorial Hospital after an extended illness. He was the husband of Sisaltina (Pacheco Rei) Arruda.
    Born in Remedios Bretanha, Sao Miguel, Azores, son of the late Joao Sousa and Emilia (Moreira) Arruda, he lived in the Azores for the first 44 years of his life, moving to Fall River in 1969. He lived in Westport for the past 25 years and was a communicant of Esperito Santo Church in Fall River.
    Mr. Arruda was employed at the Rosemar Silver Co. in Taunton for several years prior to his retirement in 1990. He was a member of the Our Lady of Light Band Club.
    Survivors, in addition to his widow, include five sons, Dionisio Arruda, Victor Arruda and Joe Arruda, all of Westport, Henry Arruda of Fall River and John Arruda of Tiverton, R.I.; six daughters, Leonilda Sousa, Teresa Pereira and June Raposo, all of Fall River, Fatima Cabral, Darlene Arruda and Cisaltina Damaso, all of Westport; five brothers, Jaime Arruda, Manuel Arruda and Clement Arruda, all of Fall River, Jose Arruda of Tiverton and the Very Rev. Henry S. Arruda, pastor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in New Bedford, four sisters, Emilia Rego of Toronto, Canada, Maria Hilario and Leontina Arruda, both of Fall River, and Teresinha Silva of Taunton; 21 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
    Arrangements are by the Silva-Faria Funeral Home, 730 Bedford St., Fall River.

    NEW BEDFORD -- Charlotte (Botelho) Misiaszek, 51, of New Bedford, died Wednesday, September 9, 1998, at St. Luke's Hospital after a long illness.
    She was the wife of Edward J. Misiaszek and daughter of Hazel (Medeiros) Ambrose of New Bedford and the late George J. Ambrose Sr.
    She was born in Acushnet and was a lifelong resident of New Bedford.
    She was a parishioner of the Church of the Holy Name. She loved being with her family and enjoyed her flower garden.
    Survivors include her husband and mother; two daughters, Tammy L. Misiaszek and Keely R. Misiaszek, both of New Bedford; a son, Curtis E. Misiaszek of South Dartmouth; three sisters, Cynthia Mastera of Acushnet, Sandra LeBlond of New Bedford and Donna Lee Vigeant of Rochester; four brothers, Danny Botelho of Acushnet, Robert J. Ambrose of Lakeville, George J. Ambrose Jr. and Barry W. Ambrose both of New Bedford; her granddaughter; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
    A funeral Mass will be at 9 a.m. Monday at the Church of the Holy Name.
    Arrangements are by, Fairhaven Funeral Home, 117 Main St., Fairhaven.

    Vu Van Mau, former South Vietnamese prime minister, 84


    PARIS -- Vu Van Mau, a prominent figure in South Vietnam and prime minister for five days before it fell to the Communist North in 1975, has died in Paris. He was 84.
    Vu Van Mau died in a Paris hospital on Aug. 20 of natural causes, his son, Dung Vu Hoang, told The Associated Press today.
    Vu Van Mau served as foreign minister under President Ngo Dinh Diem from 1955 to 1963. He was named prime minister five days before the country fell to Communist troops on April 30, 1975.
    He also was Vietnam's ambassador to Britain, Belgium, the Netherlands and Austria in the mid-1960s, and was president of South Vietnam's pacifist Forces for National Reconciliation party before the country's collapse.
    Known for his theories of non-violence, he wrote books on Buddhism, law and civilization. He remained in Vietnam until 1988, when he settled in France.
    Vu Van Mau is survived by five children and 15 grandchildren. A funeral was held Aug. 28.
