Walter H. Baker
WESTPORT -- Walter H. Baker, 84, died at home, Monday, Sept. 28, 1998, after a long illness. He was the husband of Rita C. (Chabot) Baker and son of the late Rodman H. and Loretta (Smith) Baker.
Born in Fall River, he has lived in Westport for 46 years and was a communicant of Our Lady of Grace Church.
Mr. Baker was a store manager for more than 30 years for Royal Store, Fall River, until retiring in 1976. He also had been manager at Gentlemen's Warehouse, Taunton, for six years.
He was a former member of the board of directors at Westport Federal Credit Union and a member of Greenwood Terrace Senior Citizens Center.
Survivors include his widow; three daughters, Janet Britland, Bernadette Palmer and Donna Ribeiro, all of Westport; three brothers, Rodman H. Baker Jr., and Francis Baker, both of Fall River and Joseph Baker of Swansea; three sisters, Dorothy Bastille, Marion Cordeiro and Patricia Biltcliff, all of Fall River; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Hazel Barcellos, William Baker, Helen DiCorpo, Rita Lile and Ruth Rousseau.
A funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Our Lady of Grace Church.
Arrangements are by the Potter Funeral Home, 81 Reed Road.
Kenneth C. Curtis
SOMERSET -- Retired Navy Chief Quartermaster Kenneth C. Curtis, 86, of Wyola Road, Swansea, died Monday, Sept. 28, 1998, at the Clifton Rehabilitative Nursing Center. He was the husband of Irene M. (Bowler) Curtis and son of the late Owen and Minnie (Reynolds) Curtis.
Born in Pawtucket, R.I., he lived in North Attleboro in his early life.
He enlisted in the Navy in May 1928 and served on active duty for more than 26 years and in the Fleet Reserve for four years. He rose through the ranks and at the time of his retirement was a chief quartermaster.
At the beginning of World War II, he served on a mine sweeper in the Pacific Theater of War and also served on several ships and was stationed at several naval training centers until retiring in 1954.
Chief Curtis has been a resident of Swansea since 1954 and for many years was a bartender at Julio's Men's Bar in Providence, until retiring in 1975. He was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association, American Legion Post 303, Swansea, and a plank member of the Navy Memorial Foundation, Washington, D.C.
Survivors include his widow; a son, Michael Curtis of Lincoln; a daughter, Nancy A. Viveiros of Fall River; a brother, Owen Curtis of Exeter, N.H.; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was the father of the late Kenneth C. Curtis.
His funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. the Rose E. Sullivan and Waring Home, 866 County St., which is handling arrangements.
Eleanor Correa
MARION --Eleanor (Lowell) Correa, 85, formerly of Fairhaven Road, Mattapoisett died Monday, Sept. 21, 1998, at the Sippican Health Care Center. She was the widow of George Correa and daughter of the late Charles W. and Lillian (Tibbetts) Lowell.
She was born in Salem and lived in the Greater Boston area until moving to Mattapoisett in 1946. She was a member of the Mattapoisett Congregational Church.
Mrs. Correa was a graduate of Everett High School. After graduation, she worked as a secretary for John Hancock life Insurance Co. She was one of the first women Realtors in this area.
Mrs. Correa was a licensed Realtor, insurance broker and notary, and ran her business under the name Eleanor Lowell Correa Real Estate.
She was a member of the Local, State and National Realtor Boards and the National Association of Notaries. In the mid-1950's, she worked for the Commission for the Blind as a secretary and driver.
She summered in Saquish, which is near Plymouth.
She loved her granddaughters and shared in many of their activities.
Survivors include a daughter, Sylvia Camacho of Mattaposiett; a son, George Lowell Correa of Mattapoisett; a sister, Charlotte Howard of Southport, Maine; five granddaughters; three great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
She was the half-sister of the late Isabelle Lowell, Addison Lowell, and Austin Lowell.
A memorial service will be at noon Oct. 17, in Matttapoisett Congregational Church, Church St. Mattapoisett.
Arrangements by the Donaghy Funeral Home, 465 County St., New Bedford.
The day of the memorial service was incorrect in Monday's obituary.
