Edward S. Arruda
NEW BEDFORD -- Edward S. Arruda, 79, died Sunday, Sept. 12, 1999, at the Sacred Heart Home after a long illness. He was the husband of Carolina (Medeiros) Arruda.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Luiz and Maria (Pavao) Arruda, he was a lifelong city resident and a member of St. Martin's Church.
Mr. Arruda was a laborer at Alden Corrugated and previously a shipper at Charles Gillman and Son for 24 years.
Survivors include his widow; a son, Edward Arruda of New Bedford; a sister, Mary Magan of New Bedford; three grandsons, Scott Nolin, Chris Nolin and Michael Nolin; a great-granddaughter, Alycia Nolin; and several nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Henry Arruda, Joseph Arruda and Honorato "Smacky" Arruda.
His funeral will be at 8 a.m. Thursday at Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth St., with a funeral service at 9 a.m. at St. Martin's Church.
Interment will be at Rural Cemetery.
Frances J. Taylor
NEW BEDFORD -- Frances J. Taylor, 82, of New Bedford, died Monday, Sept. 13, 1999, at the Oaks Nursing and Rehabilitation Center after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in New Bedford, daughter of the late Joseph S. and Mary (Karcher) Taylor, she lived in this community all her life.
She attended New Bedford schools and was employed as a stitcher in local textile mills until retiring.
She is survived by many nieces and nephews.
She was the sister of the late Joseph H. Taylor.
Her funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Wilson Chapel, 479 County St., followed by burial in Rural Cemetery.
Joseph D. Bettencourt
NEW BEDFORD -- Joseph Donald Bettencourt, 69, of New Bedford, died Sunday, Sept. 12, 1999, at St. Luke's Hospital after a long illness. He was the husband of Ramona M. (Sylvia) Bettencourt; they were married 46 years.
A lifelong New Bedford resident, he was the son of the late Victor and Christine (Rebello) Bettencourt. He was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church, where he served as a lector, Eucharistic minister and Confraternity of Christian Doctrine teacher. He was also a member of St. Vincent dePaul Society of his church.
Mr. Bettencourt was a garage attendant for the City of New Bedford Police Department for 15 years, retiring in 1995. He previously worked at Cornell-Dubilier as a dye setter for 18 years.
He served in the Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict and was a recipient of the Korean Service Medal, U.N. Service Medal and National Defense Service Medal.
He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Freetown Memorial Post 6643.
Survivors include his widow; a son, Michael J. Bettencourt of New Bedford; three daughters, Kathleen M. Lemieux, Lisa M. Amaral and Laurie A. Bettencourt, all of New Bedford; five grandchildren, Michael G. Lemieux of Orlando, Fla., and Kayla Bettencourt, Meghan Amaral, Kristi Vary and Jakob Vary, all of New Bedford; a step-grandson, Brian Amaral Jr., of New Bedford; and several nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late William Bettencourt, Thelma McQueen and Robert Bettencourt.
His funeral Mass will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday in Sacred Heart Church.
Arrangements are by the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St.
Burial will be in Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.
Jerry Crock, 92
BOCA RATON, Fla. -- Jerry Crock, also known as Max Krock, 92, of Delray Beach, formerly of New Bedford, Mass., died Sunday, Sept. 12, 1999, at Hospice by the Sea. He was the husband of Lillian (Kivowitz) Crock.
Born in Brockton, Mass., son of the late Samuel and Rebecca (Schwartz) Crock, he lived in New Bedford and South Dartmouth, Mass., before moving to Florida.
He was co-owner of Madewell Manufacturing Co., retiring in 1966. He was also a substitute teacher in the New Bedford public school system from 1966-1989.
He was a member of Tifereth Israel Congregation, New Bedford Jewish Convalescent Home and Wamsutta Lodge of Masons, all in New Bedford.
Survivors include his widow; two daughters, Betty Shapiro and her husband, Peter, of Concord, N.H., and Judi Mickelson and her companion, Paul, of New Bedford; a son, Stan Crock and his wife, Pam, of Chevy Chase, Md.; a brother, Harold Crock of Delray Beach; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
He was the brother of the late Rose Rafkin, Mary Miller Hull and Doris Goldband and grandfather of the late Scott Derek Mickelson.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. today from the Tifereth Israel Congregation, 145 Brownell Ave., New Bedford. Burial will be in Plainville Cemetery, New Bedford.
Arrangements are by the Max Sugarman Memorial Chapel, 458 Hope St., Providence.
Henry C. Hall
LAKEVILLE -- Henry C. Hall, 61, a retired chief financial officer and executive vice president for Sippican Inc., Marion, died at home Monday, Sept. 13, 1999, after a short battle with cancer. He was the husband of Ruth C. (Bavin) Hall; they were married 34 years.
Born in Bridgewater, the son of the late John A. and Anna M. (Drinkwater) Hall Sr., he lived in Lakeville for 30 years.
He was educated in the Bridgewater school system and was a graduate of Bentley College.
Mr. Hall served in the Navy for three years.
He was an avid golfer since his retirement in 1995.
Survivors include his widow; a son, James Hall and his fiancée, Marion Dumaine; two daughters, Leanne Hyder and her husband, John Hyder and Michelle Bringle and her husband, Erik Bringle; four grandchildren, Austyn Hyder, Kaici Hyder, Dakota Bringle and Hannah Mead; two brothers, John Hall and William Hall; a sister, Catherine Bernardo; many nieces and nephews; and the Bavin family, who have been a great support to him throughout.
His funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Dahlborg-MacNevin Funeral Home, 280 Bedford St.
Cremation will follow.
Angelina Almeida
DARTMOUTH -- Angelina Almeida, 77, died unexpectedly Monday, Sept. 13, 1999, at home. She was the wife of Manuel Almeida.
Born in Agua de Pau, Sao Miguel, Azores, Portugal, the daughter of the late Agostinho and Celestina Matos, she lived in the New Bedford area since 1980.
She was a communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.
Survivors include her widower; two sons, Carlos Almeida and Jose T. Almeida, both of New Bedford; two daughters, Maria Almeida of New Bedford and Angelina Baptista of South Dartmouth; a sister, Isabel Carreiro of New Bedford; nine grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Her funeral Mass will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.
Arrangements are by the Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth St., New Bedford.
Norman Rodrigues
FALL RIVER -- Norman "Rocky" Rodrigues, 75, of Star Street, a retired correctional officer for 18 years at the Department of Corrections, Bridgewater, died at home Monday, Sept. 13, 1999, after a long illness. He was the husband of Mary (Nicolau) Rodrigues; they were married 49 years.
Born in Fall River, the son of the late Manuel and Emily (Cabral) Rogers, he was a lifelong resident of the city and a communicant of Sacred Heart Church.
Mr. Rodrigues was an active member of the Liberal Club and a past member of its board of directors; he was president of the Holy Ghost Society.
Survivors include his widow; a son, Ronald Rodrigues of Fall River; two sisters, Minie Czkalski and Evelyn Swenson, both of Fall River; two brothers, Manuel Rogers and David Rogers, both of Fall River; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Elsie Haskins.
His funeral will be at 8 a.m. Wednesday at the Oliveira Funeral Home, 2064 S. Main St., with a funeral Mass at 9 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, Linden Street.
Burial will be private.
Frances M. Weathersbee
SOMERSET -- Frances M. (Donohoe) Weathersbee, of Somerset, died Sunday, Sept. 12, 1999, at the Southcoast Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was the wife of George E. Weathersbee; they were married 60 years.
Born in Cambridge, daughter of the late Francis and Katherine (Smith) Donohoe, she lived and was educated in Cambridge. She was a 1931 graduate of St. Mary High School and graduated from Miss Cofran's Business School.
For 25 years, she was a resident of Portland, Maine, and while living there, she was the president of the Mother's Club at Payson Investment Co. Since 1965, she had lived in Somerset and was a communicant of St. Thomas More Church.
Mrs. Weathersbee was a secretary in the office of Wolfson and Zalkind of Fall River, retiring in the late 1970s.
She was a member of St. Thomas More Women's Guild and the Ladies Sodality of the church.
Survivors include her widower; a son, Edward P. Weathersbee II of Holden; a sister, Susan Donohoe of North Cambridge; three grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and two nieces.
She was the sister of the late Catherine Shea.
Her funeral will be at 9 a.m. Thursday from the Rose E. Sullivan and Waring Home, 866 County St. (Route 138), Somerset, followed by a Mass in St. Thomas More Church, Luther Avenue.
Burial will be in Nathan Slade Cemetery, Somerset.
Manuel Medeiros
NEW BEDFORD -- Manuel Medeiros, 77, of Clover Street, South Dartmouth, died Sunday, Sept. 12, 1999, at St. Luke's Hospital after a year-long illness. He was the husband of Olivia (Frias) Medeiros.
A lifelong Dartmouth resident, he was the son of the late Joseph and Leontina (Correia) Medeiros. He spent the last several years wintering in Florida.
Mr. Medeiros was a utility operator for Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. for 29 years until he retired in 1983.
A Navy veteran of World War II, he received the Purple Heart.
He was a communicant of St. Mary's Church, Dartmouth.
He was a member of the Goodyear Seniors Club, an he enjoyed flying model airplanes and working on anything mechanical, especially lawn mowers, boating and model railroading.
Survivors include his widow; a daughter, Joyce M. Gonsalves of South Dartmouth; a brother, Gilbert "Gilly" Medeiros; three grandchildren, Daniel Gonsalves Jr., Randy J. Gonsalves and Kerry Lynn Gonsalves, all of South Dartmouth; and several nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Belmida Costa and Joseph D. Medeiros.
His funeral will be at 9 a.m. tomorrow from the Dartmouth Funeral Home of Sullivan-Waring, 230 Russells Mills Road, Dartmouth, followed by a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, Dartmouth Street; burial will be in South Dartmouth Cemetery.
Mary B. Cummings
LAPEER COUNTY, Mich. -- Mary B. Cummings, 82, formerly of South Dartmouth, Mass., and Ocala, Fla., died Wednesday, Sept. 8, 1999. She was the widow of Ralph B. Cummings.
Born in New Bedford, Mass., she was the daughter of the late John Barron.
Mrs. Cummings was the proprietor of the Kiln Ceramic Studio in South Dartmouth for many years, where she taught ceramics. She was a member of the New Bedford Quota Club.
Survivors include four daughters, Elizabeth Sylvain and Kathleen DeGain, both of Michigan, and Ann Santos and Marjorie Selig, both of Dartmouth; 13 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are by the Muir Brothers Funeral Home, 225 Main St., Imlay City.
