    Stoughton -- Violet M. (Haynes) Ortiz, 80, of middleboro, formerly of mashpee, died monday sept. 13, 1999, at new england sinai hospital after a lengthy illness. She was the widow of chief petty officer clemente a. Ortiz.
    Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Chief Wildhorse of the Wampanoag Tribe, Mashpee, and the late Daisy (Mingo) Haynes, she moved to Mashpee as an infant, living there until 1943 when the family moved to Middleboro. She was a resident of Oak Hill Nursing Home, Middleboro for the last 11 years.
    Mrs. Ortiz was known for her baseball knowledge, especially of the Red Sox. Being a baseball enthusiast, her ability to remember baseball statistics was remarkable.
    She took pride in sharing the family history, culture and the role her father played in the rich culture of the Wampanoaq nation. Mrs. Ortiz always had fond memories of Mashpee, sharing those memories with everyone around her.
    During the Roosevelt administration, she was active in the Works Progress Administration., hooking rugs and making clothing for needy children.
    Mrs. Ortiz will always be remembered for her sensitivity and compassion not only for her family members, but for all mankind.
    Survivors include a son, Christopher Ortiz of Rhode Island; a daughter, Indy Clark of Rhode Island; three brothers, Clinton Haynes, Adrian Haynes and Squanto Haynes, all of Middleboro; three sisters, Anita Nielson of Middleboro, Nakomis Wilson of Mashpee and Daisy Moore of Washington, D.C.; and four grandchildren.
    She was sister of the late Vernon Haynes, Rita Wilson and Naomi Haynes.
    Her funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Egger Funeral Home, 61 Pearl St., Middleboro.
    Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Middleboro.

    Edith Harris


    SALEM -- Edith "Yum" (Young) Harris, 88, of Grovesnor Park, died Tuesday, Aug. 31, 1999. She was the widow of David H. Harris.
    Born in Fairhaven, July 12, 1911, daughter of the late Philip E. and Edith B. Young, she lived most recently in Falmouth and Sarasota, Fla. She moved to Grovesnor Park this summer to be near her family. Her father was founder and president of the Acushnet Co. of New Bedford.
    Mrs. Harris graduated in 1928 from Fairhaven High School and was a graduate of Tufts University.
    Survivors include a son, David P. Harris of Lake Forest, Ill.; a daughter, Martha H. Walton of Marblehead; a brother, Richard B. Young of Mattapoisett; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
    She was the mother of the late Betsy H. Schofield.
    Cremation and graveside services were made in Salem.

    John J. DeCicco

    NEW BEDFORD -- John James DeCicco, 81, of New Bedford, died at home, Monday, Sept. 13, 1999, after a long illness. He was the husband of Yvonne M. (Landry) DeCicco; they were married 53 years.
    A lifelong New Bedford resident, he was the son of the late Vincenzo and Roseangela (Solometa) DeCicco. He was a communicant of St. Kilian Church.
    He was a baker for Giusti Baking Company for 42 years until retiring.
    Mr. DeCicco was a World War II Army veteran and served during the Philippine Campaign. He was the recipient of the Philippine Liberation Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with Bronze Service Arrowhead and the American Theater Campaign Ribbon.
    He was a lifetime member and past commander of the Poirier Post 3260, Veterans of Foreign Wars; a member of the American Legion Post 0459 of New Bedford; the Military Order of Cooties; and the Exercise Tiger Association. He was very active in veterans affairs and was an avid marcher in all parades.
    Survivors include his widow; a son, Michael J. DeCicco of New Bedford; a brother, Henry DeCicco of New Bedford; two sisters, Frances Conti of Florida and Marion Patterson of Fairhaven; and several nieces and nephews.
    He was the brother of the late Annie DeCicco, Louise DeCicco, Joseph DeCicco, Salvatore DeCicco and Pasquale DeCicco.
    His funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Kilian Church.
    Arrangements are by the Rock Funeral Home, 1285 Ashley Blvd.

    Stanley A. Stykowski


    GULFPORT, Fla. -- Stanley A. Stykowski, 65, formerly of New Bedford, Mass., died at home, Monday, Sept. 13, 1999. He was the husband of Martha (Malone) Stykowski; they were married 43 years.
    Born in New Bedford, son of the late Stanley and Aldea (Auclair) Stykowski, he was a graduate of Holy Family High School in New Bedford. He moved to Florida in 1983.
    Mr. Stykowski was the owner of a service station and was a member of St. Joseph's Church.
    Survivors include his widow; a son, Michael Stykowski of Coconut Grove; two daughters, Suzanne Robinson of Annapolis, Md., and Maureen Stykowski of Gulfport; two sisters, Glory Zyskowski of Milford, Mass., and Donna Roderick of New Bedford; and six grandchildren.
    A memorial Mass will be at 8 a.m. Saturday in St. James Church, New Bedford.
    Arrangements are by the David C. Gross Funeral Homes and Crematory, Central Avenue Chapel, St. Petersburg.

    Edward S. Arruda


    NEW BEDFORD -- Edward S. Arruda, 79, died Sunday, Sept. 12, 1999, at the Sacred Heart Home after a long illness. He was the husband of Carolina (Medeiros) Arruda.
    Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Luiz and Maria (Pavao) Arruda, he was a lifelong city resident and a member of St. Martin's Church.
    Mr. Arruda was a laborer at Alden Corrugated and previously a shipper at Charles Gillman and Son for 24 years.
    He was an Army veteran of World War II with the rank of tech 4.
    Survivors include his widow; a daughter, Kathleen Daley of East Freetown; a son, Edward Arruda of New Bedford; a sister, Mary Magan of New Bedford; three grandsons, Scott Nolin of Fayetteville, N.C., Christopher Nolin of Freetown and Michael D. Arruda of New Bedford; a great-granddaughter, Alyssa Kate Nolin; and several nieces and nephews.
    He was the brother of the late Henry Arruda, Joseph Arruda and Honorato "Smacky" Arruda.
    His funeral will be at 8 a.m. Thursday at Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth St., with a funeral service at 9 a.m. at St. Martin's Church.
    Interment will be at Rural Cemetery.

    Edwin S. Borden


    FALL RIVER -- Edwin S. Borden, 82, of Old Bedford Road, an engineer for the former Firestone Tire and Rubber who retired in 1981 after 38½ years, died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999, at Charlton Memorial Hospital after a long illness. He was the husband of Rose A. (Vanasse) Borden.
    Born in Fall River, son of the late Beriah E. and Ethel L. (Smith) Borden, he lived in Westport for most of his life. He lived in Corry, Pa., from 1970 to 1980.
    He was a member of the Westport United Congregational Church.
    Mr. Borden was past master, as well as a 65-year member of the Watuppa Grange 365, Westport; and a member for more than 50 years of the Massasoit-Narragansett Lodge A.F. & A.M.; Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite of Free Masonry of the Valley of Southeastern Massachusetts; Palestine Temple of the Ancient Arabic Order of The Nobles of the Mystic Shrine; James Morris Post 145, American Legion, of Westport; and the American Association of Retired Persons.
    He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving as a lieutenant junior grade and earning a Purple Heart and Presidential Unit Citation for the Battle of Leyte Gulf.
    Survivors include his widow; a son, Kenneth E. Borden of Dennis; a daughter, Janice E. Benoit of Westport; a brother, Russell F. Borden of Westport; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
    His funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Potter Funeral Home, 81 Reed Road, Westport, followed by prayers at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Grace Church, Sanford Road, Westport.
    Interment will be in Notre Dame Cemetery.

    Harold A. Dorschug

    BUZZARDS BAY -- Harold A. Dorschug, 86, died Monday, Sept. 13, 1999, at the Cape Cod Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was the widower of Winifred Scott Dorschug.
    Born and raised in Syracuse, N.Y., he lived in West Hartford, Conn. from 1957 to 1993.
    He had a lifelong interest in radio, television, and broadcasting. He was an avid amateur radio operator from the age of 16 when he earned the call sign W8AST (later WlAST).
    Mr. Dorschug studied electrical engineering at Syracuse University and began working for CBS in New York City in 1935. A member of the first CBS television remote crew, he was one of the two engineers on duty in master control the night of Orson Welles' famous 1938 broadcast of "The War of the Worlds."
    From 1947 to 1955, he served as chief engineer at WEEI in Boston and, during his time there, taught radio and television courses at Boston University.
    Mr. Dorschug's later career was in Hartford, Conn., where he served as director of engineering at WHCT-TV and WTIC-AM-FM-TV.
    He was a senior member of the IEEE; an active member of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE); and a registered professional engineer in Connecticut.
    Mr. Dorschug published a number of articles about various aspects of radio and television broadcasting. He retired from WTIC in 1978 as vice president of engineering, research and development.
    After his retirement, he enjoyed travel, including a trip to Alaska in 1989, photography and teaching creative writing classes.
    He served in the Navy during World War II and went on inactive duty with the rank of lieutenant.
    Survivors include a son, Douglas A. Dorschug of Mountain City, Tenn.; a daughter, Elizabeth D. Giddings of Rochester; and four grandchildren, Sarah-Kate Giddings, Annie Giddings, Patrick Giddings and Margaret Giddings, all of Rochester.
    His funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Stott, Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Highway (Route 28), Wareham.
    Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, West Hartford, Conn.

    NEW BEDFORD -- Brian D. Gomes, 43, died Monday, Sept. 13, 1999, at Beth Israel Hospital after a brief illness.
    Born in Port Chester, N.Y., son of Juliana E. (Rodericks) Gomes and Manuel "Manuta" Gomes, both of New Bedford, he lived in New Bedford for most of his life.
    He was a communicant of Our Lady of the Assumption Church.
    Survivors include his parents; two daughters, Monique Toby of Hyannis and Felecia Francis of New Bedford; two brothers, Allan Gomes and Mark Gomes, both of New Bedford; two sisters, Earline Duarte of Taunton and Cheryl Gomes of New Bedford; and several nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
    His funeral Mass will be at 9 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of the Assumption Church.
    Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery.
    Arrangements are by the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St.

    Walter F. Lewis


    NEW BEDFORD -- Walter F. Lewis, 88, formerly of Pope Street, Salem, a retired maintenance worker in Salem, died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999, at the Hathaway Manor Extended Care Facility after a brief illness. He was the widow of Ora (Patenaude) Lewis.
    Born in New Bedford, son of the late Francis and Delina (Bowman) Lewis, he lived in Salem before recently moving back to New Bedford.
    He was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church.
    After retirement, Mr. Lewis worked as a school crossing guard in Salem.
    Survivors include his nephew, Gerald Lewis of New Bedford and his wife, Maureen Lewis; four great-nephews; a great-niece; and a great-great-niece.
    His Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph's Church.
    Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery No. 1.
    Arrangements are by the Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth St.
