MATTHEW F. RYAN
NEWTON -- Matthew F. Ryan, 86, of Wellesley and South Dartmouth, died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002, at SunBridge of Newton.
Born in Newton, he was the son of the late Thomas T. and Annie (Whelan) Ryan.
Mr. Ryan was a former employee of Dennison in Framingham. He was a World War II Army veteran and a member of the Wellesley American Legion Post 72 and the Disabled American Veterans.
Survivors include three sisters, Mary M. Ryan of Wellesley, Kathleen R. Roberts of Raynham and Harriet R. Ryan of Middletown, R.I.; a brother, Thomas T. Ryan Jr., of Wellesley; a nephew, Thomas J. Ryan of Wellesley; and a grandnephew and grandniece, T. Joseph Ryan of Reading and Lisa Ryan of Medfield.
His funeral will be at 9:15 a.m. Friday from the George F. Doherty & Sons Funeral Home, 477 Washington St., Wellesley, followed by a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Paul Church, Wellesley. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Wellesley.
WILLIAM J. CLARK
UTICA, N.Y. -- William J. Clark, 73, of New Hartford, died Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2002, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center with his family at his side. He was the husband of Pauline (Bertrand) Clark whom he married on Feb. 24, 1968, in New Bedford, Mass.
Born on Jan. 8, 1929, in Utica, he was the son of the late Carl and Irene Davis Clark. He graduated from Utica Free Academy and from Utica College in 1952.
He was an Army veteran of the Korean War and worked at the Griffiss Air Force Base as a contract specialist, retiring in 1984.
Mr. Clark was a member of St. Thomas Church, New Hartford. He was also a member of the William E. Burke Council No. 189 Knights of Columbus.
Survivors include his widow; two sons, Michael and Matthew Clark, both of Falls Church, Va.; a sister, Adree Buehier and her husband, Jerome, of Melbourne, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
His funeral Mass was held on Sept. 28 at St. Thomas Church, New Hartford. Interment was at Green Lawn Cemetery, New Hartford.
Arrangements were by Friedel, Williams, Coriale & Edmunds Funeral Home, New Hartford.
PAUL A. MILLER
DARTMOUTH -- Paul A. Miller, 67, of Dartmouth, died unexpectedly at home, Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002. He was the husband of Geraldine A. (Sherman) Miller.
Born and raised in New Bedford, the son of Irene (Roberts) Miller of New Bedford and the late Joseph T. Miller, he moved to Dartmouth 30 years ago.
Mr. Miller was formerly employed as a fish lumper on the New Bedford waterfront until his retirement.
He was a graduate of New Bedford High School and attended New Bedford Textile Institute.
He served in the Navy during the Korean War and was a recipient of the National Defense Medal and Good Conduct Medal.
He was a member of the Fish Lumpers Union Local 1749 and the Quitticus Lodge AF & AM. He was president of the Horseshoe League in Naples, Fla.
Survivors include his widow; his mother; a son, Thomas J. Miller of Seekonk; a sister, Marsha Crowe of Lancaster, Pa.; two grandchildren, Ashley Miller and Jessica Miller; a niece; and two nephews.
His memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St. Burial will be private.
ROSE B. SADECK
NEW BEDFORD -- Rose B. Sadeck, 89, of New Bedford, died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002, at Sacred Heart Home after a brief illness.
Born in Taunton, the daughter of the late George and Sultana (Paul) Sadeck, she lived in New Bedford since the early 1950s. She was a communicant of Our Lady of Purgatory Church.
Miss Sadeck was formerly employed in the etching department at the Continental Screw Co. until her retirement.
She was a member of Sacred Heart-Holy Name Senior Citizens and the Continental Retirees.
Survivors include two sisters, Mary A. Sadeck of New Bedford and Thecla Sadeck Mardo of Taunton; a brother, John G. Sadeck of Westport; and several nieces and nephews.
She was the sister of the late Julia Thomas.
Her Divine Liturgy will be at 9 a.m. Saturday in Our Lady of Purgatory Church. Burial will follow in St. Mary Cemetery.

BETTY JANE WRIGHT
BUFORD, Ga. -- Betty Jane (Jones) Wright, 86, of Hayesville, N.C., died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002, at the Laurel Bay Healthcare of Lake Lanier. She was the widow of Joseph W. Wright.
A native of Summitt County, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Roy Del and Eva Mae Rothman Jones. She had lived in New Bedford, Mass., for many years with her late husband until moving to Hayesville.
Mrs. Wright was a bookkeeper for several accounting firms and a member of the Downings Creek Baptist Church.
She was presented with a lifetime membership and had served as past Worthy Matron of the Clay Chapter No. 11 North Carolina Order of the Eastern Star.
Survivors include a son, George Wright and his wife, Linda, of Loves Park, Ill.; a daughter, Jo Sandberg and her husband, Rusty, of Sugar Hill, Ga.; a sister, Dorothy Coburn of Willard, Ohio; six grandchildren, Kim Mitchell, Diane Hahn, Ken Jensen, Joseph Wright, Matthew Wright and Michael Wright; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Her funeral service will be at 3 p.m. today at the Townson Rose, Frank Rose Sr. Memorial Chapel in Hayesville. Burial will be in Oak forest United Methodist Church Cemetery.
ANNA G. STEEVES, 98
MATTAPOISETT -- Anna Grace (Sherman) Steeves, 98, of Mattapoisett, died at home Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002. She was the widow of Ross Owen-Smith Steeves.
Born in Boston, a daughter of the late Charles and Annie (Henessee) Sherman, she lived in Mattapoisett for the past 37 years.
Mrs. Steeves was employed as a sales clerk with Raymond's Department Store in Boston for 11 years until she married and became a homemaker.
She was a communicant of St. Anthony's Church.
A member of the Mattapoisett Seniors, she enjoyed knitting and cooking.
Survivors include a daughter, Lois A. Dargon and her husband, Joseph, of Mattapoisett; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was the mother of the late John Ross Steeves and sister of the late Doris Mullins, and Arthur, Paul, Charles and Lillian Sherman.
Her funeral will be at 9 a.m. Saturday from the Fairlawn Home of Waring-Sullivan, 180 Washington St., Fairhaven followed by a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Anthony's Church, 22 Barstow St.
Burial will be in St. Anthony's Cemetery.
THERESA MACOMBER
NEW BEDFORD -- Theresa (St. Pierre) Macomber, 78, of Bedford Towers, died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002, at St. Luke's Hospital. She was the widow of Everett M. Macomber Sr.
Born in Quebec, Canada, she had lived in New Bedford since 1988, moving from Mattapoisett.
Mrs. Macomber was a homemaker.
Survivors include two sons, Everett Macomber Jr. of East Freetown and William Macomber of New Bedford; and two grandchildren.
Her funeral will be at 9 a.m. Friday from the Donaghy-Hathaway Funeral Home, 465 County St., with a graveside service at 10 a.m. in Evergreen Cemetery, Dartmouth.
EMILE J. CHOUINARD

SOMERSET -- Emile J. Chouinard, 87, of Sakonnet Bay Manor, Main Road, Tiverton, R.I., formerly of Winthrop Street, Fall River, died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002, at Clifton Rehabilitative Nursing Center. He was the husband of Cecile A. (Caron) Chouinard; they were married 62 years.
Born in Fall River, the son of the late Antoine and Clarina (Joubert) Chouinard, he lived in the city most of his life and in Tiverton for the past four years.
A retired police officer, Mr. Chouinard was a member of the Fall River Police Department for 26 years. He was also a machinist for Fairhope Fabrics for many years.
An Army veteran of World War II, he was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, St. Anne Fraternity, Liberal Club, Franco-American Civic League, Massachusetts Police Association, Fall River Police Relief Association, Fall River Retired Municipal Employees Association, the Holy Name Society of St. Anne Parish, Fall River and Knights of Columbus, Tiverton.
Survivors include his widow; two sisters, Helen LaBrie and Rhea Byron, both of Fall River; a brother, Wilfred Chouinard of Fall River; and nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Delia Deschenes, Diana Thibault, Doris Ritz and Odilon, Arthur, Adrien, Edmond and Alfred Chouinard.
His funeral will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday from the Auclair Funeral Home, 690 S. Main St., Fall River, with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Anne Church, South Main Street, Fall River.
Entombment will be in Notre Dame Cemetery Mausoleum, Fall River.
LECOQ DUTRA, 91
NEW BEDFORD -- Lecoq Dutra, 91, of New Bedford, died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002, at the home of his daughter after a brief illness. He was the widower of Matilda (Banda) Dutra.
Born in Horta, Faial, Azores, he came to the United States in 1959 and was employed here in several shoe factories.
He was the owner of Sapataria Lecoq, and later purchased Dutra's Shoe Repair in New Bedford for his late son, where they worked together for many years.
Survivors include a daughter, Maria Nieuwenhuizen, also known as Fatima Lecoq; three grandsons, Peter, Anthony, and Cornelis Nieuwenhuizen; a granddaughter, Crystal Dutra; two great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
He was the father of the late Mario Dutra and grandfather of the late Mario L. Nieuwenhuizen.
His funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at St. James Church, New Bedford.
Burial will be in St. Johns Cemetery.
Arrangements are by the Wilson Chapel, 479 County St.

CEASAR F. MARQUES

NEW BEDFORD -- Ceasar F. Marques, 80, of South Dartmouth, died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, at Hallmark Nursing & Rehabilitation Center after a brief illness. He was the widower of Alice (Duarte) Marques and son of the late Joseph and Emily Marques.
Born in New Bedford, he lived in Dartmouth all of his life. He was a communicant of St. Mary Church, South Dartmouth.
Mr. Marques was formerly employed by Hardy Brothers as a carpenter until his retirement.
Survivors include two sons, Lawrence Marques and his wife, Nancy, of Freetown and Raymond J. Marques Sr. and his wife, Sandy, of South Dartmouth; a daughter, Sharon M. Letourneau and her husband, Todd, of South Dartmouth; a brother, John Marques of Dartmouth; a sister, Constance Souza of Dartmouth; and five grandchildren, William Lowther, Rachel Lowther, Rebecca Marques, Shauna Marques and Raymond J. Marques Jr.
He was the father of the late Linda M. Marques.
His funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Friday in St. Mary Church, South Dartmouth. Interment will be in St. John Cemetery.

CLAIRE J. TREMBLAY

NEW BEDFORD -- Claire J. (Gregoire) Tremblay, 69, of West Wareham, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002, at St. Luke's Hospital. She was the wife of Leo R. Tremblay, with whom she celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in April.
Born in Fairhaven, the daughter of the late Norbert and Laura (Benoit) Gregoire, she had lived in Wareham for many years. She wintered in Largo, Fla.
Mrs. Tremblay was known as "Mom," "Memere," "Grandmemere" and "Aunt Claire." The loves of her life were her husband, who was also her best friend, her children and grandchildren, and preparing Sunday dinner for her family.
She was a member of Pocahontas in Wareham and was an avid card player. She also enjoyed traveling.
Survivors include her widower; four sons, David Tremblay and his wife, Fatima, and Dennis Tremblay and his wife, Donna, all of Wareham, and Daniel Tremblay and his wife, Maria, and Douglas Tremblay and his wife, Nancy, all of New Bedford; three daughters, Jacqueline Rendek of Dartmouth, Carol Fairclough and her companion, Stephen Graustein, of Acushnet, and Joanne Chase and her companion, Keith Amorin, of New Bedford; a brother, Laurent Gregoire of Wareham; a sister, Cecile Arruda of Fairhaven; 16 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was the sister of the late Rachel Neves and mother-in-law of the late Lawrence Rendek and Dean Fairclough.
Her funeral Mass will be at 9:30 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church, Fairhaven. Burial will be private.

ANITA SIROIS, 92

FALL RIVER -- Anita (Clement) Sirois, 92, of Highland Avenue, formerly of William Street, died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, at Charlton Memorial Hospital. She was the widow of Louis J. Sirois.
A lifelong Fall River resident, she was the daughter of the late Eubaldi and Aurore (Deshaies) Clement. She was a communicant of St. Anne Church since 1972.
Mrs. Sirois had been a seamstress for Laura Curtain and Amy Lynn Draperies.
She was a past member and secretary of the John M. Arruda Senior Citizens Club and a member of the Oliveira Apartment Tenants Club.
Survivors include a daughter, Claudette Rebello of Berkley; a son, Charles Sirois of Amesbury; a sister, Edna Clement of Fall River; two brothers, Raymond Clement of Fall River and Roland Clement of Attleboro; 17 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Rosalie (Sirois) Shea.
She was the mother of the late Robert L. Sirois and sister of the late Cleo Clement.
Her funeral will be at 9 a.m. Saturday from the Boule Funeral Home, 615 Broadway, followed by a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Anne Church. Interment will be in Notre Dame Cemetery.
LAUREL A. COLLINS

FALL RIVER -- Laurel A. (McCarthy) Collins, 57, of Ships Watch, North Main Street, died at home, Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002, after a long illness. She was the former wife of attorney Francis L. Collins.
Born in Staten Island, N.Y., daughter of the late Patrick J. and Doris (Mackey) McCarthy, she lived in Fall River for the past 27 years, formerly living on Highland Avenue. She was a communicant of Holy Name Church and a former member of its Women's Guild.
Mrs. Collins was employed by the Fall River School Department for 25 years as a special needs teacher. She was educated in public schools in Falls Church, Va., and was a 1968 graduate of Lake Erie College. She received a master's degree from the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va., in 1974.
She enjoyed gardening and collecting antiques, and made crafts such as flower baskets and wreaths.
Survivors include her former husband; a daughter, attorney Courtney H. Nowell of Washington, D.C.; a son, attorney Christopher P. Collins of Albuquerque, N.M.; a sister, Megan Davis of Colleyville, Texas; and a granddaughter, Lily Nowell.
Her funeral will be at 9 a.m. Saturday from the Jeffrey E. Sullivan Funeral Home, 550 Locust St., followed by a Mass at 10 a.m. in Holy Name Church. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery.
BEATRICE C. MADORE

BOSTON -- Beatrice C. "Auntie Bea" (Bouchard) Madore, 79, of Borden Place West, South Main Street, Fall River, formerly of Kellogg Street, Fall River, died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, at Boston University Medical Center. She was the widow of Roland J. Madore.
A lifelong resident of Fall River, she was the daughter of the late Alfred and Beatrice (Ross) Bouchard.
Mrs. Madore was a cook for the Franciscan Sisters at St. Anthony Convent, Second Street, and a member of Friday Night Crafts.
Survivors include a daughter, Paulette D. Merkel of Tempe, Ariz.; three sons, Raymond J. Madore of Gilbert, Ariz., and Michael A. Madore of Providence; five sisters, Germaine Petit, Juliette Cadrin, Louise Slean and Cecile Ponte, all of Fall River, and Pauline Chretien of Little Compton, R.I.; four brothers, Edward Bouchard, George Bouchard and Arthur Bouchard, all of Fall River, and Philip Bouchard of Florida; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
She was the mother of the late Paul E. Madore and sister of the late Dianne, Alfred, Paul and Henry Bouchard.
Her funeral will be at 9 a.m. from the Auclair Funeral Home, 690 S. Main St., Fall River, with a Mass at 10 a.m. in Notre Dame Church, Eastern Avenue, Fall River.

JOSEPH R. SILVA

DARTMOUTH -- Joseph R. Silva, 77, of Dartmouth, died unexpectedly Monday, Sept. 30, 2002. He was the former husband of Jacqueline G. (Snow).
Born in New Bedford, he was the son of the late Joseph and Emily (Motta) Silva.
Mr. Silva had been a physical education teacher at Keith Junior High School and also at local middle and elementary schools. He retired from the New Bedford school system after 25 years of service.
He was a 1943 graduate of New Bedford Vocational High School. From 1939 to 1943, he excelled in all sports. As a three-year baseball player he was selected to the All Bristol County Team in 1943 as a second baseman and was also named team captain. That year, he won the city batting crown with an average of .383. He played CYO baseball for Our Lady of Mount Carmel championship teams.
He also starred as a forward for two years on Voc and Mount Carmel basketball teams. He was Voc's starting quarterback for two years and also played football for local city leagues, including Murphy Club.
He quarterbacked for the University of Bridgeport, formerly Arnold College. In New Bedford he played semi-pro football as a player coach for the Dartmouth Hornets. He also played basketball for the well-known New Bedford Hobo's, for whom he scored 52 points in a single game.
During World War II, he served in the Navy for three years in the Pacific Theater as a gunner's mate second class. He received the World War II Victory Medal, American Theater Medal and Asiatic Pacific Theater Medal.
He was an avid golfer and a member of the Whaling City Country Club for many years.
Survivors include a son, Steven Silva of Fort Myers, Fla.
His funeral from the Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth St., will be at 10 a.m. Friday and services will be 11 a.m. at St. John's Cemetery.
