Brian Griese -- not Bubby Brister -- will be the starting quarterback for the Denver Broncos in Sunday's home game against the Green Bay Packers, coach Mike Shanahan said. Shanahan said earlier in the week that Brister, sidelined by a strained oblique muscle on his left side, needed to practice by yesterday if he expected to play this weekend. Brister tried to throw before practice, but said he was still suffering. The 24-year-old Griese started the first four games for Denver, but was benched and replaced by Brister after an 0-4 start. Also, the NFL announced it has fined the Denver Broncos $25,000 for failing to make a "timely and full disclosure" last week of the hip injury quarterback Bubby Brister suffered in practice two days before last Sunday's game against the Oakland Raiders. The injury occurred Oct. 9 after the Broncos submitted their official personnel reports on Wednesday and Thursday. The team was obliged under NFL policy to announce it as soon as possible to the media as well as the league and the Raiders, the NFL said in a news release. ... Green Bay Packers wide receiver Jahine Arnold is likely out for the season after slightly tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee at practice Thursday. The Miami Hurricanes rescheduled their game today with Temple because the Owls had trouble getting a flight to South Florida due to Hurrican Irene. The game will be played Dec. 4. Bethune-Cookman College postponed its game against South Carolina State in Daytona Beach. The game, which had been scheduled for tonight, will be played Thursday night. Central Florida bumped the start time of its game against Nicholls State from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. in hopes of missing most of the effects of Irene. The rest of the state's college football games remain unchanged.

As expected, DaimlerChrysler announced at a news conference in New York City that its Dodge Intrepid will join the NASCAR Winston Cup circuit in 2001. Dodge will return to Winston Cup with at least two teams shepherded by Ray Evernham. The former crew chief for three-time Winston Cup titlist Jeff Gordon will own one of the teams. Jim Julow, Dodge Division vice president, said DaimlerChrysler officials recognize the popularity of the Cup series and the benefit their involvement can have on the sales of Chrysler vehicles. The unveiling of the Winston Cup Dodge is tentatively planned for the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January. Dodge plans to test its new model throughout 2000. Its race debut is scheduled for the 2001 Daytona 500.

The San Antonio Spurs flirted with making history of the most unenviable sort before their little guys saved the day. Trailing almost throughout their semifinal against Italy's Varese Roosters, the NBA champions used a late run for a 96-86 victory and avoided becoming the league's first team to lose at the McDonald's Championship. As Spurs big men Tim Duncan and David Robinson had poor offensive games, point guard Avery Johnson had 18 points and 12 assists, while backcourtmate Mario Elie scored half of his 16 points in a 32-13 run over the final 9:30. Varese forward Francesco Vescovi had 20 points.
