Jingle Bell Walk raises funds and awareness

The 11th annual Joseph C. Saulino Jingle Bell Walk will take place on Sunday, Nov. 26. The 5.2-mile walk begins and ends at the Hudner Oncology Center at St. Anne's Hospital in Fall River. Individual walkers, teams and corporate sponsors raise funds in advance to benefit the American Cancer Society and the fight against cancer.
According to event chairman Al Saulino, the American Cancer Society hopes to raise $40,000. The Jingle Bell Walk was founded by Mr. Saulino 11 years ago after his son Joseph passed away of a rare form of colon cancer. While remembering Joseph and others who have died from cancer, the Jingle Bell Walk is a chance for everyone to raise both money and awareness while celebrating the reality that cancer can be beaten, Mr. Saulino said.
Since its inception, the Jingle Bell Walk has raised more than $280,000 for the American Cancer Society.
Corporate sponsors for the event include Sullivan Funeral Homes Inc.; Fall River Municipal Credit Union; Saulino & Silvia, P.C.; Fall River Five Cents Savings Bank; the Jarabek Family; Jukebox Diner; K.E.E. Distributors and Sales; Mayor Edward M. Lambert Jr.; Trident Mortgage Corp.; Thomas C. Norton; RHS Associates; Swan Finishing Co.; and St. Anne's Hospital.
According to the American Cancer Society, cancer causes one in four of the nation's deaths. However, through great strides in research and early detection methods, there are 8.4 million cancer survivors in the United States today. Funds raised through the Jingle Bell Walk go toward the American Cancer Society's programs of research, education, prevention, detection and patient services. This includes such local services as Road to Recovery, Reach to Recovery and Look Good Feel Better. The toll-free information line, (800) ACS-2345, is available 24 hours a day, every day. The Web site is www.cancer.org
For more information on the Jingle Bell Walk or for a registration form, please call the American Cancer Society at (508) 996-0166.
