CHRISTOPHER J. RAMOS ![]()
TAUNTON -- Christopher J. Ramos, 46, of Algerine Street, Berkley, died Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, at Morton Hospital. He was the husband of Debra (Smith) Ramos of Berkley.
Born in Fall River, the son of Elizabeth (Mello) Machado of Fall River and the late Leonardo Ramos, he was a Berkley resident for the past 10 years. He was a 1976 graduate of BMC Durfee High School.
He was a member of St. Joseph Church, Fall River.
Mr. Ramos had worked as a construction laborer.
Survivors include his widow; his mother; two sons, Jesse Ramos and Michael Ramos, both of Berkley; four brothers, Arthur Ramos of Berkley and Antone Ramos, David Ramos and Brian Machado, all of Fall River; three sisters, Donna Santos, Lorie Boucher and Roberta Ramos, all of Fall River; a granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.
His funeral will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday from the Manuel Rogers & Sons Funeral Home, 1521 N. Main St., Fall River with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph Church, North Main Street, Fall River.
Interment will be private.
MR. FARIA
JOHN A. FARIA ![]()
NEW BEDFORD -- John A. Faria, 75, of New Bedford died Friday, Nov. 1, 2002 at St. Luke's Hospital after a brief illness. He was the husband of Helena (Monte) Faria; they were married 53 years.
Born in Barnstable, the son of the late Emerlinda Faria, he lived in New Bedford for most of his life.
He was a communicant of St. Francis of Assisi Church.
Mr. Faria was employed as the senior head custodian at the Alfred J. Gomes Elementary School for 20 years until he retired in 1993.
He had also previously been employed by Servomation and Brittany Dye and Print.
During World War II, he served in the Navy in the Asiatic-Pacific theater, and was awarded the Philippine Liberation Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Medal, the American Area Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5988 in Bourne.
An avid camper for 40 years, he was a member of the Cranberry Coachmen Chapter 35.
With his family by his side, he was one of the original campers at both Bayview and Maple Park Campgrounds.
He was also a resident at the Bourne Scenic Campground for many years.
Survivors include his widow; a son, Robert A. Faria and his wife, Elizabeth, of New Bedford; two daughters, Linda Martins and her husband, Jorge, of New Bedford, and Brenda St. Laurent of New Bedford; a sister, Mary Moore of North Carolina; five grandchildren, Wendy Kozens, Lisa Bates, Scott DeTerra, Bernadette Barreira and Adam Faria; and three great-grandsons, Kyle Hamel, Tyler Marinelli and Hunter Bates; and all his children whose lives he touched at the Gomes School.
He was the brother of the late Henry Faria and brother-in-law of the late Kathleen Faria.
His Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Francis of Assisi Church.
Burial with full military honors will follow in Rural Cemetery.
Arrangements are by the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St.

FALL RIVER -- Jose Correia De Melo, 80, of Highlander Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, Highland Avenue, died Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, at Charlton Memorial Hospital. He was the widower of Zulmira Correia Da Ponte.
Born in Ribeira Grande, Sao Miguel, Azores, he was the son of the late Dinis De Melo Bulhoes and Ines De Melo Correia. He lived in the Azores for most of his life.
While living in the Azores, Mr. De Melo worked as a farmer for many years.
Survivors include five sons, Jose Mariano Correia De Melo and Oliver C. Melo, both of New Bedford, Manuel Francisco De Melo of Fall River, Gualberto Correia De Melo of Sao Miguel and Helder Manuel De Melo of Lisbon, Portugal; four daughters, Maria Filomena De Sousa of Ontario, Canada, Delia Medeiros and Helena De Melo, both of Fall River and Paula De Melo of Middleboro; a brother, Domingos De Melo of Fall River; two sisters, Maria Correia and Ana Vieira, both of Fall River; 16 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Mariano De Melo.
His funeral will be at 8 a.m. Wednesday from the Oliveira Funeral Home, 215 Columbia Street, with a Mass at 9 a.m. in Santo Christo Church, Columbia Street.
Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Robeson Street.
MR. COX
EDWARD J. COX ![]()
SOMERSET -- Edward J. Cox, 85, of Wilbur Avenue, formerly of Redwood Road, Tiverton, R.I., died Sunday, Nov. 3, 2002, at Clifton Rehabilitative Nursing Center. He was the widower of Rita "Pat" (Berube) Cox.
Born in Fall River, the son of the late James and Annie Cox, he lived in Tiverton for three years and in Somerset for the past three years.
Mr. Cox formerly worked in Fall River's garment industry. He worked at Whittenton Garment in Taunton for several years.
He was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II.
Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Felker of East Greenwich, R.I., and Patricia A. Furze of Rumford, R.I.; a son, Edward J. Cox II of Bristol, R.I.; two sisters, Gertrude Turgeon of Tiverton and Dorothy Ring of San Diego; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Annie Bishop, James Cox and Thomas Cox.
His funeral will be Wednesday at a time to be announced at Auclair Funeral Home, 690 S. Main St., Fall River.
Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery, Fall River.
VIRGINIA L. MCKNIGHT
WAREHAM -- Virginia L. (Wheeler) McKnight, 74, of Wareham died Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, at Tobey Hospital. She was the wife of Richard A. McKnight; they were married 45 years.
Born in Newton, the daughter of the late Carl A. and Florence J. (Scott) Wheeler, she lived in Lancaster, Calif., for 36 years; she resided in Wareham since 1996.
She graduated from Newton High School in 1946.
Mrs. McKnight enjoyed knitting, sewing and crocheting.
Survivors include her widower; a son, Clifford E. McKnight and his wife, Tia, of Kennesaw, Ga.; a daughter, Christine C. Hale, and her husband, Howard, of Lancaster; a sister, Margaret A. Bracken of Wareham; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
She was the sister of the late George M. Wheeler.
Her funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Stott, Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Highway (Route 28). Burial will be in Lancaster.
WALTER SZWAJA
DARTMOUTH -- Walter Szwaja, 88, of Dartmouth, formerly of Capital Street, New Bedford, died Friday, Nov. 1, 2002, at home. He was the husband of Mary R. (Gauthier) Szwaja.
Born in New Bedford, he was the son of the late Casamir Szwaja and Agnes (Paleczka) Szwaja.
He was a machine operator at Continental Screw until he retired in 1977.
He was a communicant of St. James Church in New Bedford.
Survivors include his widow; a son, Peter Szwaja of Swansea; two daughters, Karen A. deLacy of New Bedford and Paula M. Briden of South Dartmouth; three sisters, Amelia Carlson of Chatham, Evelyn Popielnicki of Acushnet and Isabell Rainville of California; a brother, Stanley Anuszcyk of California; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
His funeral will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth St., New Bedford, with a Mass at 10 at St. James Church, New Bedford.

ROGER BRIGGS
MARION, Ill. -- Roger Briggs, 53, of Benton, Ky., died Friday, Nov. 1, 2002, at Marion Veterans Administration Hospital. He was the husband of Patricia (Randall) Briggs, and the son of the late Louis A. and Elizabeth (Cloyd) Briggs.
Born in Marion, Mass., he lived there for many years; he resided in Kentucky since 1992.
Mr. Briggs was a truck driver for Bluegrass Cooperage in Benton.
He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War.
A member of Olive United Methodist Church, Benton, he was a life member and past commander of the Benjamin D. Cushing Post 2425 in Marion.
Survivors include his widow; a son, Roger Briggs Jr. of Norfolk, Va.; a daughter, Carrie Harper, and her husband, Martin, of Paris, Tenn.; a brother, Louis A. Briggs Jr. of Fairhaven, Mass.; two sisters, Dorothy Aranjo and Erva, both of New Bedford, Mass.; two grandchildren, Devin Harper and Tyler Harper, both of Paris; and nieces and nephews.
His graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at North Marion Cemetery, Marion.

OLIVINE F. FROST, 91
AUBURN, Wash. -- Olivine F. (Howland) Frost, 91, formerly of Acushnet, Mass., died Sunday, Oct. 27, 2002, after a long illness. She was the widow of Wendell E. Frost.
Born in South Dartmouth, Mass., the daughter of the late William T. and Marie (Fichtenmayer) Howland, she was an Acushnet resident for most of her life.
Mrs. Frost was employed as a teacher by the Acushnet public school system for 21 years.
She was a graduate of New Bedford High School, New Bedford, Mass., and Lesley College, Boston, Mass., class of 1931.
She was a member of the Acushnet Grange and the Sippican Pamona Grange. She was also a member of the Acushnet Historical Society and the Acushnet Retired Teachers Association.
Survivors include a son, Wendell A. Frost of Renton; and three grandchildren.
Her graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Long Plain Cemetery, Acushnet.
Arrangements are by Kirby Funeral Home, 61 Tarkiln Hill Road, New Bedford.
