Obituaries
FRANCIS J. BABIEC
PAWTUCKET, R.I. -- Francis J. "Frank" Babiec, 73, of Prospect Street, died Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002, at Pawtucket Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Janina "Jean" (Kiluk) Babiec; they were married 52 years.
Born in Pawtucket, the son of the late Peter and Apolonia (Majeski) Babiec, he was a lifelong resident of the city.
Before retiring, Mr. Babiec was employed at Washburn Wire Steel Co. of East Providence for 29½ years, for the Providence School Department for two years and later for the Pawtucket School Department Custodial Service. He retired in 1994.
He enjoyed polka dancing, world travels, gardening and Polish and world history. He also collected many interesting artifacts.
He was a member of the Polish Subcommittee of the Historical Preservation and Cultural Commission of the State of Rhode Island since its inception and held various offices. He participated in all Heritage Day events held on the State House lawn in September, along with other State House events.
He was involved in organizing the Polish flag-raising ceremony held annually at Pawtucket City Hall in October in observance of Polish Heritage Month.
He co-authored the book entitled "Polish in Rhode Island -- A Proud Legacy," and co-chaired the statewide clothing drive in 1982. Items collected during this drive were sent to Poland during the time that martial law was in effect.
Mr. Babiec was a member of the Polish Genealogical Society of Massachusetts and the Polish Cultural Center in Washington, D.C., and a board member of the Friends of Poland, New Bedford, Mass., where he was active in collecting and sending medical supplies to Poland and participated in the group's recent sponsoring of an ambulance to Poland.
He was active in St. Teresa's Senior Citizens Group, including their bus trips, and was a volunteer server at St. Patrick's Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners in Providence for the past 16 years. He was also active in many community, state and national events over the years.
Survivors include his widow; a daughter, Cheryl N. Babiec of Pawtucket; a son, Dr. Daniel F. Babiec, D.M.D. of Alexandria, Va.; a brother, Peter Babiec Jr. of North Attleboro, Mass.; three grandchildren, Thaddeus, Olivia and Catherine Babiec, all of Alexandria; and nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late John, Bronislaw "Benny" and Stanley Babiec.
His funeral will be at 9 a.m. Thursday from the Karol A. Romenski & Sons Funeral Home, 342 High St., Central Falls, with a prayer service in the funeral home at 10 a.m.
Burial in Sacred Heart Cemetery, New Bedford, will be private.
JOSE M. AMARAL
FALL RIVER -- Jose Moniz Amaral, 89, of Highland Avenue, formerly of Wellington Street, died Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002, at Highlander Rehabilitation and Nursing Care Center. He was the husband of Georgina (Furtado) Amaral.
Born in Porto Formoso, Sao Miguel, Azores, he was the son of the late Jose and Virginia (Da Costa) Amaral. He had been a Fall River resident since 1950.
Before retiring, Mr. Amaral was a laborer in the landscaping industry.
He was a member of St. Michael Church.
Survivors include his widow; three sisters, Maria Espirito Santo and Francelina Moniz Amaral, both of Porto Formoso and Diamentina Moniz of Fall River; two grandsons; and several nieces and nephews.
He was the father of the late Mary (Amaral) Mello and brother of the late Peter Amaral and Maria Jose Moniz.
His funeral will be at 8 a.m. Wednesday from the Manuel Rogers & Sons Funeral Home, 1521 N. Main St. with a Mass at 9 a.m. in St. Michael Church.
Entombment will be in Notre Dame Cemetery.
LLOYD WRIGHT
WAREHAM -- Lloyd Wright, 86, of Wareham died Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, at Forestview Nursing Home.
Born in Granville, Conn., he lived in Granby, Conn., for many years until he moved to Wareham.
Mr. Wright worked in a drum factory and at a printing press for many years until he retired.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a Boston Red Sox fan.
There are no immediate survivors.
He was the brother of the late Michael Wright and Lenora Wright.
His funeral and burial will be private. Arrangements are by the Stott, Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Highway.
MARTHA T. SYLVIA ![]()
NORTH CONWAY, N.H. -- MARTHA (TURNER) SYLVIA, OF TAMWORTH, FORMERLY OF SOUTH DARTMOUTH, MASS., DIED THURSDAY, NOV. 14, 2002, AFTER A LONG ILLNESS. SHE WAS THE WIDOW OF ROBERT O. SYLVIA; THEY WERE MARRIED 62 YEARS.
Born in Schenectady, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Harold and Orille Turner.
Mrs. Sylvia graduated from Russel Sage and St. Lawrence University and was a homemaker her entire life, raising four boys.
She was a past president of the Garden Club of New Bedford, Mass., and a volunteer for the Meals on Wheels program in Tamworth. She enjoyed tennis, gardening and travel.
Survivors include three sons, Tim Sylvia of Mattapoisett, Mass., Robert T. Sylvia of Damariscotta, Maine, and Andrew L. Sylvia of Albany, Ohio; seven grandchildren, Thomas and Michael Sylvia, both of Glenns Falls, N.Y., Anne Geisler of Edgecombe, Maine, Nina Sylvia of Kennebunkport, Maine, Alex Sylvia of Athens, Ohio, Benjamin Sylvia of Damariscotta and James Roger Sylvia of Mattapoisett; and two great-grandchildren, Jack Sylvia of Glenns Falls and Melville Geisler of Edgecombe.
Her graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Monday in Elm Street Cemetery, South Dartmouth.

FALMOUTH -- Jovena (Raposo) Mello, 90, of Jones Road died Monday, Nov. 18, 2002, at Harborside Nursing Center. She was the widow of Joseph C. Mello.
Born in Fall River, the daughter of the late Francisco and Anna (Cordeiro) Raposo, she lived in Falmouth eight years; she previously resided in Fall River.
Mrs. Mello was a homemaker and a member of St. Michael's Church, Fall River.
Survivors include a daughter, Beverly Rosario of Plymouth; a sister, Gilda Rogers of Fall River; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was the mother of the late Vivian Dias Lima.
Her private funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Manuel Rogers & Sons Funeral Home, 1521 N. Main St., Fall River, with a Mass at 11 at St. Michael's Church, Essex Street, Fall River.
Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Fall River.
ANTONE C. MATHEWS ![]()
NEW BEDFORD -- Antone C. "Tony" Mathews, 89, of New Bedford died unexpectedly Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002, at St. Luke's Hospital.
A lifelong New Bedford resident, he was the son of the late Jacintho C. and Mary (Oliveira) Mathews. He was an active communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. He was a member of the Holy Name Society and received the Marian Medal, which he proudly wore daily.
Mr. Mathews worked for the U.S. Postal Service for many years; he retired in 1973.
He was a staff sergeant in the Army during World War II. He received the American Theater Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal and World War II Victory Medal.
He was a volunteer at Sacred Heart Home and received an award for more than 800 hours of service. He was an avid fan of the New York Yankees.
Survivors include his niece, Elaine Meredith of New Bedford; two great-nieces, Lisa Hart of New Bedford and Deirdre Bussy of Assonet; a great-nephew, Matthew Meredith of Mashpee; several great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews; and numerous godchildren.
He was the brother of the late Jesse C. Mathews.
His funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery.

NEW BEDFORD -- Americo G. "Mac" Ferreira, 83, of New Bedford, died Monday, Nov. 18, 2002, at St. Luke's Hospital after a brief illness. He was the husband of Maria Clara (Madeira) Ferreira.
Born in Dartmouth, the son of the late Antone Gomes Faria and Mary (Nobrega) Faria, he lived in New Bedford most of his life.
He was a communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.
Mr. Ferreira was employed as a truck driver at Scovill Manufacturing for 10 years until his retirement. He previously worked at Boston Nickel Plating, Aerovox and Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co.
He was a former member of Clube S.S. Sacramento deMadeirense in New Bedford and formerly served as publicity director for the Feast of the Blessed Sacrament.
He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and was an avid New York Yankees fan.
Survivors include his widow; two daughters, June E. Monteiro and her husband, Robert, of South Dartmouth and Jane M. DeFaria and her husband, Henry, of Westport; a sister, Linda Nogueira of New Bedford; four grandchildren, Rebecca Monteiro and Ryan Monteiro, both of South Dartmouth and Matthew DeFaria and Katelin DeFaria, both of Westport; and several nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Adelaide Taylor and Frank Nobrega.
His funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Burial will follow in South Dartmouth Cemetery, South Dartmouth.

FALL RIVER -- Norman "Norm the Barber of 1784 South Main Street" Desjardins, 68, of Guild Street, died Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002, at Southpointe Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. He was the husband of Leslie (Foster) Desjardins; they celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary on Oct. 22.
Born in Fall River, the son of the late Donat and Gertrude (Shanley) Desjardins, he lived in Tiverton, R.I., for 17 years and in Fall River for most of his life.
A barber for 50 years, he owned and operated Norms' Barber Shop, South Main Street, Fall River for 37 years. Before opening his own shop, he worked as a barber at the Newport Naval Base.
He was a graduate of Rogers High School, Newport, R.I. and was a member of Saint Anne's Fraternity for many years.
He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include his widow; a daughter, Diane Lambert of Fall River; two sons, Steven G. Desjardins of Lexington, Va. and Kenneth S. Desjardins of Fall River; six grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
His funeral will be at 9 a.m. Thursday from Auclair Funeral Home, 690 S. Main St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in Good Shepherd Church, 1550 S. Main St.
Burial will be in St. Patrick Cemetery.
FERNANDO L. CORREIA
NEW BEDFORD -- Fernando L. Correia, 82, of New Bedford died unexpectedly Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002, at St. Luke's Hospital. He was the husband of Deolinda Correia. They were married 60 years.
A lifelong resident of New Bedford, he was the son of the late Antone and Antonia (Lima) Correia.
He was a communicant of Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish.
Mr. Correia was a sergeant in the Army during World War II.
He formerly was a foreman/presser at Bristol Clothing.
Mr. Correia enjoyed having breakfast with his friends at McDonald's.
Survivors include his widow; a son, Lawrence Correia of Dartmouth; a daughter, Mary Ann Correia of New Bedford; a sister, Dora Correia; a grandson, Michael W. Correia; two granddaughters, Lisa Sughrue and Julie Pryzbyszewski; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
His funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery.

NEW BEDFORD -- Roland Joseph Bedard, 76, of Fairhaven died Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002, at St. Luke's Hospital after a long illness. He was the husband of Dolores Rita (Berube) Bedard; they celebrated their 52nd anniversary on Nov. 4.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Firmin and Marie (St. Pierre) Bedard, he lived the past 39 years in Fairhaven where he was a communicant of St. Joseph Church.
Mr. Bedard was a pressman at Acushnet Co., rubber division, for 45 years, retiring in 1988.
He served in the Army during the Korean War and was a member of the Fairhaven Veterans of Foreign Wars, Phoenix 2892 Post.
He loved working around the beach in front of his home, but most of all, he enjoyed being with his family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include his widow; three sons, Alan Bedard and his wife, Louise, and Gary Bedard, all of Fairhaven and Brian Bedard and his wife, Gloria, of South Carolina; a daughter, Cheryl Surprenant and her husband, Troy, of South Dartmouth; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Helen Fredette of New Bedford; and several nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Albert Bedard, Alphonse Bedard, Joseph Bedard, Yvonne Gautreau, Josephine Lizotte, Sr. Adrienne Bedard and Antoinette Picard.

at St. Joseph Church. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery.

DIGHTON -- Helen M. (Borden) Peckham, 91, of Westport died unexpectedly Monday, Nov. 18, 2002, at Dighton Nursing Center. She was the widow of Herbert F. Peckham.
Born in Fall River, the daughter of the late Frank E. and Clara M. (Chace) Borden, she resided in Westport since 1926.
She was a member of Pacific Union Congregational Church, Westport.
Mrs. Peckham was a member of the American Association of Retired Persons, Dartmouth Chapter 1257, and her church choir.
Survivors include a daughter, Ethel Shaw of Westport, six grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was the sister of the late Howard E. Borden, Walter Borden, Albert Borden, Kenneth Borden, Grace Fitton and Clara Brayton.

LAURENCE D. ALMEIDA ![]()
HOUSTON -- Laurence D. Almeida, 40, of Jefferson Drive, Lake Charles, La., died Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002, at the Veterans Affairs Hospital, Texas Medical Center, after a long battle with cancer.
Born in New Bedford, Mass., the son of Laurence F. Almeida of New Bedford and the late Joyceline L. Cabral, he lived in this area until 1977. He was a communicant of Our Lady Queen of Heaven Parish.
Mr. Almeida was a crew chief with the Blue Angels from 1987 until his illness in 1989.
He was a decorated Navy veteran for his service on the USS Coral Sea during the bombing of Libya in 1986. He was proud of his service in the Navy.
Survivors include his father; two sisters, Karyn Estrella and Annette Almeida, both of New Bedford; a daughter, Kristy Bang of Lake Charles; several nieces and nephews, including Jaimie Pogany and Lauryn Estrella; and aunts and uncles.
He was the brother of the late Daniel J. Almeida.

WOODBRIDGE, Va. -- Robert G. Duquette, 49, of Fredericksburg, Va., formerly of Fall River, Mass., died Friday, Nov. 15, 2002, at Potomac Hospital. He was the husband of Linda (Langford) Duquette.
Born in Fall River, the son of Gerard I. and Lucille (Pineault) Duquette of Fall River, he lived in Virginia for the past 20 years.
A graduate of Monsignor Prevost High School, Fall River and Providence College, Providence, he studied at Suffolk University, Boston, Mass., and was principal analyst for Schafer Corp., Arlington, assigned to the Boeing Corp. defense contract.
He was a member of the alumni associations of Monsignor Prevost High School and Providence College.
Survivors include his widow; his parents; a brother, Marc A. Duquette and his wife, Susan, of Fall River and New Hampshire; and aunts, uncles and cousins.

FALL RIVER -- Olivia (Cordeiro) Lopes, 88, of Highland Avenue, formerly of South Main Street, died Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002, at the Highlander Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center. She was the widow of John Lopes.
Born in Fall River, a daughter of the late Manuel Cordeiro and Maria (Pavao) Cordeiro, she was a lifelong resident of the city.
Mrs. Lopes worked as a sewing machine operator for several years in the local garment industry and was also a homemaker.
Survivors include a daughter, Linda Mello of Swansea; a sister, Alma Scholes of Fall River; and several nieces and nephews.
Her funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Oliveira Funeral Home, 215 Columbia Street. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery, Stafford Road.
MALVINA E. PERRY
WAKEFIELD -- Malvina E. "Molly" (Desroches) Perry, 86, of Clark Shores, Lakeville, died Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002, at Harborside Health Care after a long illness. She was the widow of George M. Perry.
Born in New Bedford, she was the daughter of the late Philias and Mary L. (Plante) Desroches. She lived in Lakeville since 1968.
Mrs. Perry retired in 1978 from Elcoa Dress Co., New Bedford.
She was a member of Sts. Martha and Mary Church, Lakeville.
Mrs. Perry was a member of the Friendly Seniors and the Golden Seniors in Lakeville; Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary Post 6643, East Freetown; the International Ladies Garment Workers Union; and was treasurer of the Clark Shores Association in Lakeville.
Survivors include a daughter, Jacqueline, and her husband, Richard C. Carr, of Woburn; two brothers, Elphge Desroches of Florida and Charles Desroches of Acushnet; a sister, Edna Hansen of Ohio; two grandchildren, Jonathan Carr and Allison Carr, both of Woburn; and several nieces and nephews.
She was the sister of the late Lucille Poyant, Florence Cova and Gideon Desroches.
Her funeral will be at 8 a.m. Thursday at the Ashley Funeral Home, 35 Oak St., Middleboro, with a Mass at 9 at Sts. Martha and Mary Church, Bedford Street, Lakeville. Burial will be in Cedar Knoll Cemetery, East Taunton.
ANNIE J. MANCHESTER
SWANSEA -- Annie J. (Joseph) Manchester, 86, of GAR Highway died Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002, at Country Gardens Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was the widow of Elton E. Manchester.
Born in Fall River, the daughter of the late Nasham and Saleemie (Habeeb) Joseph, she was a lifelong resident of the city and was educated in local schools.
Mrs. Manchester was a seamstress in the garment industry in Fall River for many years until she retired.
She was a communicant of St. Anthony of the Desert Maronite Church.
Survivors include a son, Everett E. Manchester, and his wife, Eleanor, of Fall River; a daughter, Madelyn Coute; a sister, Alice Howard of Norwood; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Her funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Anthony of the Desert Church, 300 N. Eastern Ave., Fall River. Burial will be in Newport Memorial Park, Middletown, R.I.

SUSAN JACOBSON
WAREHAM -- Susan Jacobson, 53, of Wareham died Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002, at Forestview Nursing Home. She was the daughter of the late John M. and Pauline K. (Gifford) Jacobson.
Born in New Bedford, she lived in Marion until she moved to Wareham many years ago. She spent her summers in Fairhaven and graduated from Wareham High School in 1967.
Ms. Jacobson was a dispatcher for the Marion Police Department for 12 years. Previously, she worked at Design Mark in Wareham, Cliftex Co. in New Bedford and Bell Telephone in Wareham.
She was a member of the First Congregational Church.
Ms. Jacobson was an experienced scuba diver and was certified to dive in waters of 100 feet. She also was a talented underwater photographer and took many photographs of aquatic life in the Caribbean. She enjoyed crafts, especially ceramics, macrame and calligraphy.
Survivors include a brother, Philip C. Gustafson of Rochester; an uncle, James Jacobson of Florida; two nephews, Cullen Gustafson and Scott Gustafson, both of Plymouth; six nieces, Delacy Allen and Tara Bazerewsky, both of Plymouth, Audra Sciappa of Wareham, Heidi Tourigney of Bourne, and Heather Barrett and Stephanie Barrett, both of Wareham; 13 great-nephews and great-nieces; and many cousins and friends.
Her graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Rochester Center Cemetery, Rochester.

AGNES V. PELCZAR, 91
NEW BEDFORD -- Agnes V. (Barry) Pelczar, 91, of Mattapoisett, died peacefully Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002, at St. Luke's Hospital after a wonderful life. She was the widow of Charles Pelczar.
Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Martin and Annie (Curran) Barry, she had lived in New Bedford for most of her life before moving to Mattapoisett in 1968.
She was a communicant of St. Anthony's Church, Mattapoisett.
Mrs. Pelczar had worked as an educator in the New Bedford Public School System for 34 years. She served as principal at the Allen F. Wood School, Thomas A. Greene School and Thomas R. Rodman School until her retirement in 1971.
She was a member of the New Bedford Catholic Women's Club, the Daughters of Isabella, the Retired State and National Education Association and the Women's Guild of St. Anthony's Church.
She graduated from Holy Name Grammar School in 1924, New Bedford High School in 1928, Fitchburg State College in 1931 and Bridgewater State College in 1933.
Survivors include two nieces, Kathleen Evans of Mattapoisett and Margaret King of Virginia; four nephews, Robert Marchessault of Long Island, N.Y., Barry Marchessault of Connecticut, Joseph Barry of California and Thomas Barry of Vermont; her special friend and relative by marriage, George Evans; and great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was the sister of the late Helen F. Barry, Susan A. Quinlan, Hugh J. Barry, Elizabeth M. Marchessault, Martin P. Barry, Francis deS. Barry, John D. Barry, Thomas P. Barry and Margaret M. McIntyre and aunt of the late Thomas F. Quinlan.

DAVID P. REZENDES
NEW BEDFORD -- David P. Rezendes, 71, of New Bedford died Friday, Nov. 15, 2002, at St. Luke's Hospital after a long illness.
A lifelong New Bedford resident, he was the son of the late Joseph and Maria (Enos) Rezendes. He was a communicant of Immaculate Conception Church.
Mr. Rezendes was an inspector at Morse Cutting Tools until retiring.
In his leisure time, he enjoyed watching television, especially sports.
Survivors include his sister, Gloria Bernier of Acushnet; and several nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Joseph P. Rezendes Jr. and Alfred Rezendes.
His funeral was private and interment was at St. John Cemetery.

DOUGLAS STEVENS
NEW BEDFORD -- Douglas Stevens, 80, of Fairhaven died Friday, Nov. 15, 2002, at St. Luke's Hospital after a long illness. He was the son of the late Marion (Douglas) Stevens-Candage and Howard N. Stevens.
Born in Fairhaven, he lived in the town for most of his life.
Mr. Stevens was employed as a scalloper on various vessels until he retired.
He was a 1941 graduate of Fairhaven High School, where he played football. He was elected to the Fairhaven High School Hall of Fame.
Mr. Stevens was an avid golfer and longtime member of the Reservation Golf Club in Mattapoisett.
He was also a member of the Fairhaven Varsity Club, the American Legion Post 166 in Fairhaven and a member of the Fishermen's Union.
He was an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include a sister, Irene Marshall and her husband, Jack, of North Carolina; a sister-in-law, Shirley Stevens of Maryland; two stepsisters, Mary A. Lizotte of Fairhaven and Marjorie Evans of Texas; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Stevens was the brother of the late Alan Stevens and stepbrother of the late Herbert Candage.
A committal service will be in River-Side Cemetery at a later time; arrangements are by Fairhaven Funeral Home, 117 Main St., Fairhaven.
