    Scott Hoch, who would go over $2 million in winnings for the year if he won the Tour Championship and still not catch Tiger Woods on the money list, shot a 65 Friday to take the midway lead. Hoch's 36-hole total of 9-under-par 133 was one stroke ahead of Jim Furyk and two better than Mark Calcavecchia and David Duval, who was trying to become the first player to win three consecutive starts on tour since 1993. Woods would break Lehman's record by nearly $1 million if he won here and he made that a possibility Friday when he moved into contention with a 68 to get to 5-under-par 137, four strokes behind Hoch. The only two players who could overtake Woods on the money list are Davis Love III, who was at 136, and Justin Leonard, who was at 139. ... John Daly's lucrative endorsement deal with Reebok, first negotiated after he won the PGA Championship in 1991, will not be renewed, leaving Daly with Callaway Golf as his only major sponsor. ... Hale Irwin, seeking his 10th win on the Seniors Tour this year, fired a course-record 63 Friday to take a one-shot lead after the opening round of the $1 million Ralphs Senior Classic. Irwin, 52, has won his last two tournaments and five of the last eight he has entered by going 77-under-par for the 15 rounds involved to increase his official earnings to $2,131,364. ... Colin Montgomerie fumed over a triple-bogey 8 and an angry Bernhard Langer uncharacteristically threw a club away as the two leading contenders for the European money-winning title fell four strokes off the lead Friday at the tour-ending Volvo Masters. While England's Lee Westwood and Patrik Sjoland of Sweden led the field at 132 after 36 holes, Montgomerie shot a 1-under-par 71 and Langer had a 70.

    BASEBALL


    Robin Ventura's $6.1 million option was exercised Friday by the Chicago White Sox, who declined to exercise a $4 million option on Ozzie Guillen or a $1.5 million option on Ron Karkovice. Five days after winning the World Series, the Florida Marlins decided not to exercise their $5 million option on Darren Daulton or their $3 million option on Jeff Conine. Meanwhile, the New York Yankees made no announcement on whether they would exercise their $3 million option on Dwight Gooden, a decision that must be made by Saturday. New York is expected to decline the option and pay a $300,000 buyout, making the former Cy Young Award winner eligible for free agency.... American League president Gene Budig said Friday the Royals have made their decision on whether to switch leagues, and most baseball executives said Kansas City would remain in the the AL. ... A day after the San Francisco Giants announced they were cutting all ties with former scout Luis Rosa, a group of major leaguers vowed Friday to help Rosa fight sex abuse charges. Texas Rangers outfielder Juan Gonzalez traveled to San Pedro de Macoris to visit Rosa in jail.

    BOXING


    Former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson was released from the hospital following treatment for injuries from a motorcycle accident. Tyson had been undergoing treatment and testing since breaking a rib and puncturing a lung Wednesday night.

    BASKETBALL


    Former University of North Carolina basketball coach Dean Smith met Friday with student activists who oppose the school's $7.1 million contract with Nike, then spoke in support of the company. ... Veteran point guard Sherman Douglas signed a one-year contract with the New Jersey Nets on Friday, just hours before the season opener against the Indiana Pacers. Terms of the contract were not disclosed by the Nets but sources close to the team said Douglas is getting the league minimum of $272,500. He is also getting $4 million from Cleveland as part of his old contract.

    FOOTBALL


    BU football players, upset over the school's decision to cancel the program after this season, say they will cover up the school's name on their jerseys and helmets for their remaining four games, starting on Saturday against Connecticut. The Boston University Board of Trustees decided a week ago to drop football, which costs approximately $3 million a year, and use the money on other sports, including women's teams. ... Bills linebacker Damien Covington will be out at least six weeks with a sprained left knee, the second starting linebacker to be lost to the team this week. Covington, 24, was hurt during practice yesterday and will be re-examined within the next few days. A determination about surgery will be made then. ... All-Pro LeRoy Butler and the Green Bay Packers are working on a contract extension that would make him one of the highest-paid safeties in the NFL. Although neither side would any of the financial details of the talks, it's widely known that Butler is seeking a contract that pays $3 million a year. ... Dallas Cowboys fullback Daryl Johnston is out for the rest of the season after having neck surgery Friday. Johnston underwent surgery at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas to repair a herniated neck disk. ... The Redskins signed free-agent defensive tackle Chris Zorich, the team said. Zorich, 28, was waived by the Chicago Bears on Tuesday.

    HOCKEY


    The Lightning started negotiating a contract with former Flyers coach Terry Murray's agent, the agent said. Murray was fired by the Flyers in June after the team was swept by the Detroit Red Wings in the Stanley Cup finals and is now a scout with the team. The Lightning fired Terry Crisp this week.

    TENNIS


    Top-ranked Pete Sampras survived a sore shoulder and beat Thomas Muster 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 in the quarterfinals of the Paris Open Friday and went to the clinic for precautionary X-rays. According to doctors at the tournament, Sampras may have tendinitis. ... Venus Williams was ousted from the Kremlin Cup, losing her quarterfinal-round match to top-seeded Jana Novotna 7-5, 6-4. Novotna next will face No. 4 seed Conchita Martinez, the only semifinalist to drop a set Friday.
