United Church to celebrate 190 years
FREETOWN -- The United Church of Assonet will celebrate its 190th anniversary during the 10 a.m. service this Sunday.
Considered a national treasure by local historians, the church dates back to Pilgrim roots. A Revere bell in the steeple is one of 400 cast by Paul Revere and his father. The clock, produced around 1830 by George H. Holbrook of Medway, was acquired by the church from Amherst College in 1882.
There were once slave pews and a high altar in the church.
